In my teens and twenties I would never have entertained the possibility of liking Opera. As I have got older I find myself very tired of popular music. One lot of repetative banging noises after another.

I have been a fan of classical music for quite a while now and I have found myself now starting to really like some Opera.

Giuseppe Verdi - La Traviata- Libiamo Ne' Lieti Calici

For example.

Are there any others who enjoy Opera and can recommend some nice peices to listen to?

I do as well, have done as well for as long as I can remember much to the disdain of my peers. My favourite is a piece from Madam Butterfly, "Un bel di vedremo" I think it's called.

If you want a fairly gentle introduction, Guonod's Faust is good. But you need to listen to a whole opera, rather than just arias. Start by just putting one on as background music, but for the moment stick with the populist stuff like Verdi, Puccini and Donezetti. Wagner you can leave until later.
