Will You Buy Windows 7???

7 is faster than Vista on my quad with 4GB RAM. The difference is small, but it's there.

Prefetching and indexing also seem less intrusive on 7, somehow. I don't think you should disable them on Vista because they're some of its best features, but you should try them again in 7 if you don't like them in Vista, because they seem to be implemented better.

I agree with this fully, the Pre-fetching and indexing in W7 is hardly even noticeable compared with Vista, my HDD in Vista 64 would churn away for ages after a system reboot, not the case with Windows 7 at all, and also it's definitely better on the memory than Vista.

Can't wait until W7 is out, finally after all these years I can leave XP.

What is earliest possible date I can get hold of a final release of W7 ?

Whats so great about indexing?

Nothing if you know where your files are.

But you HAVE to leave indexing on because NV graphic drivers won't work to well when off and it needs indexing for the SLI in the NV control panel.

I turn off Windows search in Admin tools because my folder\file structure is ok

What systems are people going to running this on?
I'm getting 4 copies of W7 Pro

My two machines - 64bit

Q6600, 4GB RAM Nvidia 9800 GFX card and stacks or hard drive space
HP 6715b laptop with an AMD x64 chip and about 2GB RAM. Only a 5400 HDD, so that would be nice to change.

My parents machine - 32bit
Dell Pentium 3.2GHz thing with 2GB RAM
Sony Vaio 2Ghz ish with 2GB RAM

Tempted for maybe a parts refresh on my system purley for GTA :)

Jeez....someone has plenty of money to spare then?
If you pre-ordered its gonna cost you about £400. If you didn't, it's cost you about £600.

Crazy foo' !!

Pre ordered 4 copies :)

Just need to order MS Office for a couple of them later on. I'll run Open Office on my laptop, but office on the main system

How come Ultimate?

RDP seems to have less lag in Win7, connected in from work to home and all seems just that bit slicker!

Also my games/benchmarks are a few points/fps higher than Vista64 - not bad considering BETA drivers!

even so, its still £400 off the bat.

any students in your household?

Nope.. Students in my house err no...

Just one of those expensive purchases.. Going to get even more now I've had a look at some I7 stuff :D

Thing I may do for my laptop before the upgrade it to 4GB and look at a solid state drive for it.

As for the main system I'd like to get a 4 disk RAID 5 running on it, but think that'll be expensive just for a decent controller card.

We are going to Windows 7 at work too :)

Someone needs to do so work on the firewalls at your work then ;) tut tut..

I wanted the Ultimate, but could only find the Pro and Home on offer

Also who said you need IE for apps like STEAM etc? I've been using STEAM all night with only Firefox installed and not a single problem :D

It's like as if Windows 7 E knows nothing about a browser called Internet Explorer :p

I'll want pro on mine, but i can live with home on the other pc's in the house. However i ned to log in to their pc's. Anyone know if VNC or any other free RDP app will work with 7?

Pity, just bought office enterprise (2 licences) for twin 15 year olds for £41.50 inc delivery.
All perfectly legit as they are students. I could buy it for myself too as i'm a family member of a student.

You coulda saved a fortune :)

SLI isn't an issue for me. Bit nuts you need it for that.

That was my experience of Vista too. Though I didn't try with SP2. Currently trying it again on one machine with SP2. Simply because the Vista drivers worked best on that laptop.

I know where everything is too. I just find hitting the Windows key and typing the first word of a video, document, etc. a hell of a lot quicker than rooting through folders for it. This really changes the way you use your PC, but people are stuck with old mindsets. Why do the hard work yourself when you can let the computer do it?

Because most of my files don't have meaningful names. Like my photos are "DSC_4057" for example. Or if I've downloaded something its usually in the downloads folder, history or recent documents. Seems like a massive overhead just to find the occasional file that I actually
know the name of.

That said, if you find it great I'm not knocking. One of my bugbears is asking people for a file who then take about 10 minutes to find it.

What's the latest and best office to get, office XP is horrible to use after our company upgraded to Vista ?

There is a student in the house, aka my sister :D

Office 2007, what else would there be??

Being a student it will likely be enterprise edition I guess.

I have Enterprise edition which was free and I have a license to another copy (or sveeral) which costs £8.50 too!
