Natwest Student Railcard - Who has one?

Hi Guys,

My sister is about to start college soon and she will be doing a lot of travelling on the train. I notice Natwest offer a Student Railcard and have been doing so for sometime on their "student account" and this may be perfect for her.

So who has one of these? Is it worth it? Where can you use them? Online? At the station?

Yup I've got 1. Just flash it at the station when you buy your ticket, 1/3 off, job done :D Think it works pretty much all the time except on the commuter rush hour trains in the morning. I've saved so much over the past 3 years :D (you can also select you've got a rail card when buying tickets online.)

edit: also you get it for 5 years..

If so you will need to buy the ticket from over the desk at the station, there isn't a way to use them with the machines.

On the machines down here (South east) you can just select 'add rail card' when you're buying tickets with a machine and select the one you have.
 
I use mine all the time. London to York is usually around £30, rather than 50. Manchester to York is £14, rather than 20. It's a good deal.
 
Even if you have to buy the rail card yourself if you travel a few times a year it more than pays for itself :) So to get one free and for 5 years is a definite plus. Also I don't think the other banks are offering much as an alternative?
 
Looks like they are now £26/year and there are restrictions:

From 17 May the two levels of minimum fare for 16-25 Railcard (£8 and £16) were simplified to a £12 minimum fare for Single and Return tickets before 10:00am Monday to Friday.

Every self service machine I've used has had an option to add railcards. This has been at multiple stations and multi different operators. Additionally you can use them when booking tickets online.

The natwest railcard is functionally the same as the one you can buy from stations. Its well worth it if you use the trains even a little bit (It is free after all!) as I've saved a fortune.
 
yer I saved a lot of cash with my natwest card and I only used it for about 15-20 journeys throughout 3 years at uni. But thats between £1.50 and a lot more depending on the trip, I was saving every time.

I mean the most common trip was loughborough - Notts that was about 5 or 6 pounds return, it was cut down to £3 something If I recall correctly with my railcard.
 
Similarly, for those in the South, you can get a Network Railcard for £25 a year that also gives you 1/3 off (off-peak and weekends). It's surprising how many people don't know this. For me it makes a return to Waterloo £13 instead of £20, and so pays for itself after just four journeys. Plus if there are people travelling with you they get the discount too.

I'm off to Liverpool this weekend and the catchment area ends at Banbury. Cut £10-£15 off my ticket price by getting a return to Banbury then a return for the rest of the trip.
 
Note that a colleague of mine just found out that his YP card was revoked after 3 years (Friday) because he didn't use that account. I asked him to look into the t&c's.

Also note that in July & August (maybe even Sept), minimum fare doesn't apply so you can use your YP card even at peak time :D Unfortunately, they won't let you use it for a week/month season ticket, so you have to buy individual tickets.

Been using one since I was 18 :S

Every single Southern machine has a railcard option, and you can select the YPR from the list it gives you. (the button is usually at the bottom once you've selected your destination)
 
I should be getting one of these from RBS when my account changes to a student account :p, and in glasgow at least you can get a discount from the machines.
 
I use the train all of the time, my rail card must have saved me close to £500+ over 3 years of use.
 
It cost me £24 and i saved it on a trip from canterbury to preston so it was definitely worth it. You dont need to be with Natwest to get one, though. YOu can just ask for an 18-25 railcard
