MP's want £25 a day for food?

Ok, just realised this actualy makes sense and the news are blowing out of proportion.

Damn I hate the media, they confuse my poor peasant brain.

It's totally different if you get these kind of perks when working for a company. Because you and/or your company earned the extra money you can spend by being a successful business.

MPs get to decide their own wages regardless of how well they are doing and we have no direct choice on this.

What?

If you're staying away from home on business then you should get an allowance for food, regardless of your job. £25 is reasonable. In fact, in London I bet it get's you next to nothing at all.

It's got nothing to do with how well they are doing or deciding their own wages.

It's not just the news but many of the posters here. ;)

Whatever am I to do?!

But seriousely this does make complete sense, for instance where I work (Ofsted) if we have to go to a conferance in London (done this once myself) we get an overnight stay in a hotel if needed, I can imagine this costs considerably more than £25, or at least I assume so, the hotel was quite nice.

A friend of mine is an IT consultant and gets a £20/day food allowance. Why should an MP not get comparable or even greater perks than an IT consultant?

Because an IT consultant generally requires a reasonable level of intelligence.

If this is only for when you are travelling to a location other than either of your homes then its fair enough. They will be staying in a hotel etc and eating out so £25 is fair.

If they could claim that whilst staying at their second home then its ridiculous.

Have half of you posting on this thread even read the article? It's an expense when they are required to stay away from home, not for buying lunch everyday. Not that I agree with the expense btw.

I agree £25 is fine when you are away on "business". However, how the hell can any of you justify the £25 per night when you are staying away in your 2nd home?????

I've not read all the rules but under the old rules you could just claim £400 per month for food every month and a lot of Mp's did. I hope this has now changed to just when they are away for the night now?

And if you mum lives in London and you stay there, is it still fair to have £25 for the meal your mum cooks for you?

They CAN claim while staying in their second home hence it's just greed again and "extra" tax free money to top up their poor salaries.

As already stated by me and others on here, NOW'T WILL CHANGE if they can control their own finances.

Greed fosters greed.

We must march on Downing street to get any change.

Are you up for it.

Aye.

What's wrong with this?
the £9000 figure is media spinning rubbish it's

Absolutely nothing wrong with this. Even I get £25 if I'm staying away for work and I expect many other people get exactly the same, £25 a day seems to be the going rate for most people.

More knee jerk reaction by silly jealous people. Yes the system needs a reform and that some MPs where blatant fraud. But come on if you guys are going to complain. Pick on benefits they get which aren't reasonable.

I have just quoted you at random but,... these people are claiming £25 per day/night for staying at a property that they already own, be it 1st 2nd or 3rd homes. That is what is wrong with this system.

i don't see it as an issue personally, i get more than that as an allowance in my own job.

i still personally believe they should simply get a flat salary of around 200k and pay for everything out of their own pocket except for bona-fida business expenses (ie fully receipted etc as most companies operate with)

I'd rather the MPs get more money for food than the servicemen who get injured while on duty.

They clearly deserve it more.

they can not claim it for there first home. As for 2nd home that is checky.

You cant give them a £200,000 a year job can you. I mean think about it. These are the people that knew that when they were doing was wrong and yet they still did it and tried to justify it with "we were allowed".

Well that is a surprise, you made the rules on allowances and you were allowed to commit what was essentially fraud, but within the law.

If you gave them £200,000 to cover everything I bet they would suddenly have half the expenses they used to.

Well if I travel away but stay with family I get £50 ... because I am saving the company money by not spending £120 on a hotel room plus £23 food allowance. Nice!
