I played this at release and again about a year later, quite enjoyed it but don't know anyone who plays any more. Is it still quite active? And if so, anyone know a friendly guild for newbies :)

Didn't they introduce the ability to buy ingame stuff for real money? Be interested to see how it's affected gameplay, always liked EQ2.

i still played around the time it was going to happen and it was suposedly going to be a new server type not something which effected every server

Yeah I believe it was a seperate ruleset on some specific servers.

From what I can make out, the UK server(s) are still pretty well populated, and it looks like support is continuing well. 5 years is about the limit traditionally for an MMORPG, but WoW is pushing those boundaries outwards so no reason why EQ2 can't as well, especially when they are not aiming at the same market.

Eq2 has evolved since its release in Nov 2005. Anyone who played it on release and comes back to the game would be surprised at how much it has improved.

There have been various expansions the latest being "The Shadow Odyssey" or TSO for short. If you buy the latest release you get all the expansions included.

There are hundreds of guilds on the UK servers (ie Runnyeye and Splitpaw.) that play casually and also various raiding guilds ranging from casual to super hard core.

There should be a warning stating how addictive it can be IMHO. I currently raid 4 times a week on the Runnyeye server and love every minute of it. There is a lot of competition on the servers to who is the best guild which is rated on how many of the bosses have been killed in the TSO expansion. I think we are currently running in 4th place.

We have people in our guild with 4 or more level 80 chars and still levelling others!

I would definately recommend having another look. People are very willing to answer questions and help out in chat. I would say it appeals to a more mature audiance than the likes of WOW which seams more popular to the younger end (altho I did play it myself at the age of 36).

Deks

No that was the exchange servers which was ages ago, they have now introduced the station marketplace into all servers which allows you to buy Station cash with real money and buy in game items with it on any server.

EQ2 got turned into the usual grindfest with TSO shards.

I played this at release for a few months and remember quitting after a few months because soloing was difficult and finding a group was even more difficult on my monk.

Reinstalled this weekend and here's a quick summary of what's new that I've noticed:

Much more solo friendly
New starter areas make 1-20 a lot faster
Alternate character models (much better imo)
Experience curve for levels 20-70 has been smoothed (apparently)
Achievement points (get the xp for these from quests, exploration and killing named mobs and spend them in various skill trees)
No more archetypes, you pick a character at creation

It's not just that stuff though, the whole game feels better. Combat seems faster and less spammy. Access quests in the old world at least have been removed so you can go anywhere. Baubbleshire is still laggy but the new zones I've been to don't seem to suffer from that.

I've been seriously impressed since restarting. I think the only downside of the faster progression is that there are less people around in the lower tiers. On Runnyeye there's usually only around 20 people any tier (eg. 1-10, 11-20, 21-30) so finding groups will be hard. Just need more people to give it a try, think a lot will be surprised how good it is.

Expect that will change once they add the self mentoring system in which will allow higher levels to drop down to zone appropriate levels so they can do the content at the intended level.

That said, it's so solo friendly these days that soloing from 1 to 80 is easy.

Only played EQ 2 for a few weeks, looked like a good game but coudnt get into it.

Speaking of games lasting 5 years or so, EQ 1 is still going nearly 10 1/2 years later, another expansion "Underfoot" due November 2009, I've played since July 1999.

Better put - are there trial codes for this that current players/subscribers can give out which give a small boost in xp or whatever.
