England to host 2015 World Cup

Good news, Just saw it on Sky Sports :)

Not a massive Rugby fan, but will get myself to a few matches as it's always good fun to watch.

Gordon Brown is right for once in that it is going to be a Golden Decade for British Sport. We have the Rugby League and Union World cups, the Olympics and hopefully the football world cup in 2018. The rugby is the good one though seeing as we have a chance of actually winning it.

:D Fantastic

Absolutely, it's going to be a great few years, not to mention that with the money ploughed into infrastructure upgrades and suchlike it's going to benefit the country massively.

Or perhaps, given that most of the proper rugby is played in the South, and the Olympics are based in London, the South will benefit even more than normal, leaving the North to continue sucking :p

Don't forget we had the Cricket Twenty20 World Cup too :p

So far its:

2009 - Cricket 20/20 World Cup
2012 - Olympics
2013 - Rugby League World Cup
2014 - Commonwealth Games (Glasgow)
2015 - Rugby Union World Cup
2018 - Football World Cup (?)
2019 - Cricket World Cup

Not bad :p

I don't care about rugby, I don't like it, I never will, I am just pleased that we got this ahead of South Africa as I do not like them, or people from there (The 5 or so I know I am friends with but I don't like them very much)

Just goes to show what a tinpot sport rugby really is when eight of the twelve venues are football grounds. Even then one of the other four isn't in England and the other is the national stadium. The two rugby grounds in use are dreadful in comparison.

It is more to do with the amount of money injected into the sport. Rugby clubs are very self sustaining really and there are not billionaire owners willing to bank roll the teams. Putting the money into perspective the Premiership rugby sides have a wage cap of £4m a year for the entire squad. I would not be surprised if top flight football clubs have that a week in wage bills. You cannot expect rugby stadia to be of the same quality when the money involved is completely different levels.

Rugby is also inherently less popular due to the nature of the game for example in football you can just go and have a kick around whilst the same is not possible in rugby. You can throw the ball around but it is harder to have a competitive game without joining a club.

Wtf is a 'football ground'?

You mean a shared stadium? That both Football and Rugby use?

Not sure what you mean there viper?

I understand that the playing / financial side of rugby is managed vastly better than the silly world of football but surely if stadium developement was spread over, say, 20 years then all top flight clubs would be able to have their own versions of St Marys or the Ricoh Arena.

Just to show how backward their thinking is, locally a couple of years ago GRFC built their new monstrosity, I mean stand and as you can see in the picture on the BBC site it WASN'T cantilever meaning that half of those in the seats would have their view impaired by the supports.

Jeff: I think viper got confused since the premiership has 12 sides in it.

Viper: What Jeff meant was that 8 of the 12 stadia chosen to host matches are football grounds first and foremost, no RFU matches are usually played there.

In regards to my previous post I would like to add that Rugby Union only became professional in 1995 and investment just began whereas football has been professional for decades longer thus having more investment. If rugby had had the same level of investment that football had over the years then I am sure the stadiums would be of comparable sizes.

My bad. I actually got confused with the stadia chosen. Hadn't seen the list before posting and assumed they chose RU clubs' stadiums (obviously not). Anfield and The Emirates lmao! They will be lucky to fill 1/4 of those. Props to them for aiming high though.

I dont understand what you are trying to get at? Rugby is a minority sport, though in some northern towns i'd say that Rugby League (proper Rugby ;) ) is on par with football, football at premiership level has the financial support so is always going to be different. You could have said that football was a 'tinpot' sport 30 years ago.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't be supported. A lot of people (me included) are getting fed up of having football stuffed down our throats, and are starting to look elsewhere.

Having supported a now Premier League football team for a long time, I have to say I am sick and tired of football. And so I totally agree with the above comments, as I have now started watching Rugby League (Hull Kingston Rovers) a couple of years ago. They only have a small sort of 9000 capacity stadium, but the atomsphere and the excitement just eclipses football.

The game of rugby league is way more exciting than most other sports and a lot more exctiting than its (unduly) popular brother Rugby (snooze-fest kick tennis) Union. The ferocious pace, the crunching tackles, the scoring system (1 point for a drop goal and not bloody 3!!!), the wage cap is a brilliant idea (footballers wages are sickening) everything about RL is fantastic. The fans can goto each others grounds and indeed share the same stands unsegregated and not have any trouble (unlike football!). Its a friendly bouyant atmosphere.

Watch the Super League show on BBC iPlayer, and help me and other fans grow its popularity! It deserves much more than it gets and it needs to spread further, not just occupy the M62 corridor. Its fantastic that teams like Harlequins are doing well and the inclusion of Celtic Crusaders can only help but grow its influence in Wales.

I just know this post is going to be extremely controversial with football fans, but take the blinkers off and see what you are missing, RL is the new football.

Well said my RL bretheren. I've never properly supported a football club but been to a few Premiership games and RL is far superior from a spectators point of view IMO. The banter with other clubs' fans (instead of hatred) is second to none. Can you actually sit and have a pint with a fan of the opposite team in the Premiership (Football) without some idiot kicking off or the Police butting in first? I can't sit through a whole game of Football anymore, it just bores me to death. I can just about stand a game of RU but RL is pretty much the complete opposite of the two; exciting, tough but friendly, fast, skillful, etc and it's a shame that it is the 'best kept secret'.
