I've recently bought a 40d within the past couple of months and want to improve on the reach of the standard 17-85 kit lens.

I've previously used a mates 350D with a 200mm lens and this was perfect. I know the 2.8L is expensive but I'd rather do it right first time than buy and sell several lenses.

Could you post up some sample pics of the 70-200 output?

A few reviews say it goes slightly soft at the edges but most people rate it incredibly highly.

Worth the purchase?

with or without IS?

If you can afford it, get the IS (if you don't mind the weight and price), thus get it right first time.

The 4L IS is what I went for in the end over the 2.8L IS as it is half the weight and apparently sharper and half the price (I got mine for £550 new on the bay). go on www.pbase.com for sample pics

I've got the 2.8 IS. Love it. I'm nowhere near good enough to be able to use it's full potential, but occasionally I get the odd good'un.

Obviously the L series glass in question (especially the IS versions) is top notch stuff... but if you wanted to keep a fair bit of cash in your back pocket due to it being your first telephoto I can heartily recommend the 55-250 IS :) lots better than the 75-300 i have used before and is my favourite lens ;)

but like i said, them off-white ones are gonna be a different league ;)

There's really no point in posting anything to be honest. There are no better quality 70-200s available for canon mount. If your not happy, you never will be.

Some rate the 70-200 F4 L slightly better at f4 and beyond, but if you want 2.8 its not an option.

I had both for a while and kept the f4 IS, as it is small and light enough for regular use and not too obtrusive - the 2.8 is so heavy (I am not a small bloke) and made me feel very aware of others around me, who may be drawn to that bag on my shoulder...
Also, at f2.8 and 200mm, depth of field is so small that I rarely used it.
Either one is a brilliant lens though..!

I've got the 70-200 F2.8L IS;

Yes it is heavy, I got used to this, not a problem really, I'm comfortable carrying the 70-200 on my 1D and the 24-70 on the 5D at the same time.

Optech pro straps make a massive difference to how heavy it feels.

Taken with 1D MKII with 70-200 F2.8L IS

Having that extra stop of light is invaluable in my opinion, I far prefer my 70-200 to my 300 F4L IS (They weigh about the same, but in low light the AF on the 2.8 is so much faster than the 4)

It's highly rumoured that Canon have a new 70-200 2.8 IS L II in the wings. This would be a direct answer to the rumoured upgrade that Nikon are introducing however as usual it could be a while before we see anything so to anyone wanting to buy a 70-200 2.8 IS, go for it :)

I love mine, it's lovely to use, takes tack sharp photos with great colours and contrast. I only wish I got to use it more since the focal length means it's not really a walk about lens :)

Love mine, and it really shows up how average my other lenses are! need to upgrade them all to L now!

All the rumours (which are getting almost definite now) are saying September so I'd say it's definitely worth waiting to see what transpires.

I think it's decided then its just a matter of when and not if. Vertigo, can you link to anywhere with these rumours or suggest anywhere that is up to date with these rumours?

Thanks all :)

It's an absolutely fantastic lens... but unless you need it right now it may be worth waiting for some more info on the Mk2, if nothing else it might drop prices on the Mk1 a little.
