Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2.5 ...impressions?

The best years for the 2.0 engine were 2005/2006 models. They had the widened track (which you can spot as the rear arches have a skirt on them), 10 spoke 17s and a few interior improvements.

Thanks guys, I'll start to look at the 2.0 version. Any advice with regards to UK spec and Import? How can you tell one from the other?

its based on a JDM spec c so may be expensive to insure. Its also a bit fancy with adjustable AST suspension etc..

Worth a test drive though, and powerstation / litchfield will offer excellent aftersales support.

Surely just ask them to set it up to fast road use and leave it at that, and change as necessary, but im sure they would get the settings as close to right as noticeable from the off.

It has the right wheels (which dont fit on the 03 models incidentally, they had a wheel offset change along with the track change) and its also got the type UK badge as well

so yes, that appears to be a genuine Uk 2005 STI. Got the right plate as well (being a 55 plate), so thats the one to go for.

My STi was on an 05 plate but was the DCCD version...I know that you mean that a 55 plate must be the correct one, but for the purchaser, don't ignore the 05 plates...if you are doing it visually, look for the rear arch extension as well.

If I could I would have went for a Ford Mustang but due to it being LHD I can't justify it.
Why not? LHD really isn't anything to make a fuss over the ONLY issue it causes is at tolls or ticket/swipe machines where you just have to jump out the car for 5 seconds.

Visibility is not a problem, overtaking is not a problem, in fact if you drive fairly swiftly and spend more time on the outer lanes of multiple carriageways LHD is easier.

Not trying to do the whole mustang pimping thing (okay maybe a little) but do not be put off by any car as its LHD, it really isn’t an issue.

Can I ask those who have posted or that are interested in posting what they would do in my situation? What car would they opt to go for if they had £16-17k ?

I'd buy an early TVR Cerbera after a lot of research into whether it had been sorted, and keep the other £7k in case it needs drastic work.

Either that, or buy a knackered Cerbeara and spend £7k to get a Corvette engine stuffed in it. 500bhp reliably in a TVR.... oh my.

Does it have to be 4-door? You can get a lot of Boxster or Z4 for 17k...

No, doesn't have to be 4 door, not a fan of the boxster, don't mind the Z4 but after having a Z3 would like to go for a 4 seater as opposed to 2.

man, everytime I look at Mustangs it makes me want one, even more so than the Scooby. It is tempting and especialy as the prices of them aren't that bad atm. I don't know why but I'm looking for the 'catch' when it comes to buying one. Maybe I just need a little more convincing and to do a little more research :P. Ah man, my head is now twisted with thoughts and ideas.

Thx for your opinions guys :)

/Pimp mode for convincing

* Cheap TAX
* Cheap insurance
* Cheap servicing, or even do it yourself
* Cheap servicing parts
* Unlimited amount of options to customise
* Fairly practical, seats 4 and a large boot
* Goes like stink and bags of fun to drive

Whereabouts are you based? There are plenty of regular Mustang meets under the owners club. If interested you should pop along to one to have a nose, everyone is friendly enough and would be happy help.

Want to know anything else just ask. :)

i knew already that the 05 plate cars had the wider track etc.. but didnt make it clear in my post :)

if you fancy a mustang id definately recommend finding somebody who can give you a ride.

Its a completely different driving experience from the impreza, one is about lazy v8 muscle, the other is all about the 4x4 rally car feel.

Drive both and see which you prefer.

I have been looking at the 2.0 variant for the last week, having originally wanted a Focus ST or a 330i, a quick blast in my mates 03 plate WRX just had me grinning from ear to ear.

The only thing that was putting me off was the fuel consumption [i do 20k a year commute] but i am now sharing the commute with a lad nearby so that has been halved. My mate who owns the 03 WRX said that the tyres need to be replaced as a pair if you get a puncture for example, is this true?

Sorry for the thread hijack OP but i thought it was silly to start a new thread with yours running.
