As title basically. Just joined the local library and they have an extensive collection but i have no idea of good crime authors or anything. Have read a few of Simon Kernicks books but thats about it, are there any must read ones out there?

Thanks

James Patterson, Harlan Coben and Michael Connelly are all fairly generic American writers but easy reads and quite entertaining.

Christopher Brookmyre is a Scottish writer with a good line in crime fiction, again easy to read but usually with decent twists and a coherent universe with recurring characters.

Edward Bunker (played Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs) wrote pretty well, semi-autobiographical novels about criminals in America - a very interesting man.

Tom Rob Smith also seemed to have potential going by the only novel of his that I have read thus far (Child 44).

//edit and how could I forget Thomas Harris - wrote Red Dragon, Silence Of The Lambs and Hannibal.

Can't believe no one is backing Raymond Chandler here. The father of modern crime writing!

If you want 'traditional' crime / detective stories then I would agree with Raymond Chandler. And if you like those then try Dashiell Hammett (creator of Sam Spade star of The Maltese Falcon) and Mickey Spillane (creator of Mike Hammer).

Number One Ladies Detective Agency.

Good fun books, very different.

Great main character.

I missed the 1 in my post lol

Also the southern vampire mysteries by Charlain Harris are good (the books true blood is based loosely on)

I've just read 3 of George Pelecanos novels in the last two weeks, he is a writer for The Wire so I knew they would be good.
Elmore Leonard is very good, his dialogue writing is superb, the film adaptations( Jackie Brown, Get Shorty, etc) are almost word for word.
A favorite of mine is George V. Higgins he also writes as people speak and with his lawyer training and criminal contacts knows how that world works.
Robert B. Parker is also high on my list, his Spencer novels are really good, though his attempt at finishing Raymond Chandler's last novel (Poodle Springs) was not his best.
