hi

i need to get a replacement motherboard. i currently have an asus p5b

can anyone reccomend a replacement which will be cheap and work with my spec below (4gb ram)

should i just get the same one again?

thanks

jonny

How cheap? Overclocking? The p5b still under warranty?

I like asus, gigabyte and intel. Intel for when not overclocking, can get a new G35 intel board for about £40. Gigabyte and Asus are rather similar, but the former can be rma'd to milton keynes and the latter needs to go abroad.

Not for a respectable longstanding member of the forums :)

100 posts if you've been here long enough

edit: perhaps not, the faq doesn't seem to have my back on this. I'm sure I'm not making it up though

slight overclocking, around (preferably under) £50

the p5b is still within 3 year warranty but i need a quick solution and want and havnt got the patience to wait.

i might just order the same one again unless anyone thinks i may as well step up?

also - my vista copy was OEM - does that mean i need another version if i get a new motherboard?

There was a rule about 100 posts but I think you had to have joined in 2003 or something like that.

You should be able to get an ASRock P35 board (they usually feature the word "Wolf" in the name) for about £50 which would be a decent replacement. ASRock also do a P965 board called the P5B Pro, which doesn't leave much to the imagination, especially when they are part of ASUS.

I would definitely RMA it though, as it will be worth something, and you'll almost certainly need to re-install Windows to get a new board running anyway.

If you are trying to mend an old PC then you are allowed to change the motherboard and you'll probably find if you haven't reactivated windows in the last year, it will just reactivate. If it doesn't, just answer 'yes' to the question 'Was this installed on your PC when you bought it?' as effectively it was, seeing as how it's an OEM copy and you bought it for that PC. That's the advice I was given on my Microsoft sales course (God help me!).
