Did my first wedding on request of the bride and groom on Saturday.

Was a fun day, took lots of shots. Quite nerve racking though, especially in the chuch where I wasn't supposed to use flash... (I did, although was very tough so I jacked up the ISO) But considering I have no experiance / was doing it for friends I think they came out ok.

No really harsh criticism please, these have barely any processing done to them. These are just a brief selction / quickies. I have around 700+ of the day all of varying quality, these are just a few of the more iconic ones from the day...

I have not done a wedding myself so certainly cannot comment as an expert, first off well done for giving it a go.

It seems like you captured some good moments and I'm sure the bride and groom will be happy. Some of the shots seem a little soft though, what gear were you using? A couple of them are particularly grainy as well, what ISO were you using in the church?

My only other comment is that there seems to be quite a few distracting backgrounds which don't really allow the subject to stand out of the photo. #1 and #4 in particular would be much better without the cluttered backgrounds (put #4 on a nice green land/woodland backdrop and it would be great)

All in all though great work, when you get around to processing some of the others it would be great to see them. I bet you're relieved to get it done and out of the way aren't you? :)

Do you plan to do more or was this just to help friends out?

EDIT: Holy crap, just realised you're from Tunbridge Wells as well :) Hello

I can do honest crit, whether it's harsh its a matter of opinion.

At a glance I think your photos need a lot of work, from crop, levels, exposure, colours, contrast, AWB...etc. I hope you shot in RAW because a lot of the indoor shots are about 1 stop under exposed.

BTW, i know you like to show people pics asap but i wouldn't post unfinished work. Here is a tip, only show people your best work, even the best photographer take duff shots but they don't show people. If you only show people your best and finished work then they'll think you are amazing....even if you bin 99% of the rest.

I was using a quite high ISO in the church, the vicar was quite adamant that he didn't want any flash photography done in the church. In the entire days shoot that lasted from around 9:00am till 10:00pm that was the only hairy point of the day for me.

I do agree, though sadly I was battling against nerves / the environment I was in so was just grateful for a good shot!

Thank you for your comments.

I did shoot it in all RAW, I had real problems in the church due to restrictions etc.

I know this rule, I am primarily a graphic / web designer and it is something I check up on with everywork I do. This is just a safe environment for me to post in. As I said these aren't really processed and I wouldn't give someone something I wasn't happy with. E.g #12 / #13 need cropping however these are just first drafts.

That's a fair comment for someone who isn't looking for guidance and advice, but the op says he's on his first wedding shoot so crit and tips from experienced togs could be useful. For example, Squirrels comments about the backgrounds/noise. That's more helpful now than when processing has been done :)

Not quite as helpful :p hehe.

op, I think you've done great for a first time, and got some good shots that the couple ought to be happy with. You havent burnt out the white dress, which is great, processing will be fun to bring out the darker areas against it, but the scenes look good :)

Canon 400d, 430Ex Flash with diffuser, 18-55mm , 50mm prime

really need some 2.8 glass, I would've stuck with the 50mm, put it at f/2.0 and just snap all day with that.

Some of those shots have slow shutter speed due to the lack of light.

I wish I had in the church, however the ceremony was in mid flow and I didn't want to clatter around drawing attention to myself changing lenses

As mentioned, many of the shots are either soft, underexposed, have very poor backgrounds, have subject motion, camera shake, or poor brokeh. The 18-50 kit lens is not doing you any favors.

For the church exposure it is especially important to have the correct exposure when the noise is high. When you bring up the exposure in PP the noise will become really bad. This is one of the most important rules for high ISO shooting - nail the exposure to give the best chance at minimizing noise.

Good job though, must be nerve wracking.

i sympathize with you i did one at the weekend as well and its not easy, the couple had there own pro to shot all that they wanted for the day so tried to keep out the way of the pros but they still got the hump with me :D

still this is some of what i took on a D90 with 50mm f/1.8 and 70-105 f/3.4-5.6 & sb600 flash
