Does anyone have any experience with this camera? Would it be a good purchase for a 1st SLR? Ive been looking to upgrade from my Powershot A940.

I can get hold of the 500D kit for around £497. Good deal? It comes with an 18-55mm lens. I dont have any experience with other cameras and Ive always been very happy (almost brand loyal) with Canon. My dad always used Nikkon so I would maybe consider the equivalent model.

What are your opinions and thoughts?

go and play with a couple, the canon and nikons do handle differently, and you may like one more than another! either system will give outstanding pictures, more so if you're comfortable with it!

This, plus if your Dad has Nikon this is a very good reason to go for Nikon and borrow and share equipment.

I live abroad so thats out of the question.

I tested the Canon in the shop and really liked the feel of it, plus the functions, controls and layout are similar to my Powershot.
Whats the equivalent Nikon model? The only model I have handled is the D3 and thats way out of my league.

I got the 500D and its my first DSLR also and think its a great entry camera especially if you can get it at that price. People will probably say get a 40D instead as it has lower noise at high ISO and they are most likely to be right but personally I couldnt really tell the difference without viewing it full sized on a PC.

Something like the D5000 is equivalent but I don't know much about the bottom end models.

I just recently purchased a 500D which is also my first DSLR and am very pleased with it thus far - plenty of new things to experience and learn about!

Am already tempted to get a better lens (got the basic 18-55 IS) but will leave it be for now as the camera was (for me) a fairly big expenditure on it's own!

Am going to south eastern Poland this weekend for two weeks and will hopefully get a chance to let the camera stretch it's legs :)

I already caved in a replaced the kit lens with the 24-105mm L and 70-200mm F4 L, both lens looks pretty ridiculous on such a small body but the IQ is fantastic. Heres a pic of the 24-105mm fully extended

wow yea quite a difference - saw some bigger lenses when getting the 500D and was quite amused - the 50D next to it looked more suited to the lens for sure!
How much does a decent 70-200 lens go for online - as would like to do be able to go a bit closer in on some things already :p

I paid £360 for my 70-200 F4 but that was used.

New prices:

Tamron 70-200 f2.8 - £500, fast aperture but a little soft wide open and slow(ish) focus.

Canon 70-200 F4L - £460, bit slower at F4 but very sharp, basically instant, silent focus.

Canon 70-200 F4L IS - £800, same as above but even better optics and IS.

Canon 70-200 F2.8L - £850, Faster but lacks IS.

Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS - £1150, The best 70-200 lens available for Canons.
At f4 and above the F4IS is slightly sharper but this is twice as fast, soon to be replaced with the MkII.

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 - £515 - Similar to the Tamron but a bit quicker/quieter to focus.

All prices are from Onestop Digital, they are imports but they'll refund you any VAT/Import charges.

What have i got myself into :p i think sourcing a decent used one would be my best bet - will have to wait a bit before spending that much again - see if i even stick with this as i might not have time to make best use of what would be am expensive addition ...
