Is the phenom 2 worth it?

Bloody i asked a question and this thread turned into a fan boy fight. i aint bothered who i go for as long as im going to get max peformance out of my games on the cpu side of things.

i7 on socket 1336 is a workstation optimised CPU/chipset with high bandwidth.

Core2 and Phenom II are desktop optimised CPU/chipsets. Core2 is EOL, Phenom II is not.

If your interests are purely gaming, surfing and tooling around with stuff like Office then you should get a desktop class platform which in my mind means either buy into Phenom II now (Socket AM3) or wait a couple of months and see what i5/i7 (Socket 1156) looks like.

So will not make a difference to speeds then?

Lets put it this way.. for overall performance of your computer, you have to think outside of the box, not just about the cpu.

AMD phenom II is great, I'm waiting for the new 965 to come out and then build one based around that chip, I'm more of an AMD fan myself because they offer you performance for a fairer price, therefore upgrading AMD's will always be cheaper then upgrading on an intel build.

We all know that intel sides themselves with Nvidia and Nvidia are the current king of GPU's. Intel will also enable you to use tripple channel DDR3 memories. So yes, if you have deeper pockets and want max performance, i7 is the way to go.

AMD is good for general use such as gaming and browsing etc but at a more affordable price, because you can marry the chip with cheaper mobo and rams.

As for my comments made earlier about multi tasking, I should have phrased it better. What I meant was if you multitask a lot and does a lot of rendering, decoding/encoding, then the i7 will be more effiecient due to it's more advanced chip architecture (Tasks will be completed faster). Afterall Phenom are not meant to compete along side i7s. They are ranked just under it.

I'm going to add another factor into the price/performance question... if you go with Intel then there are generally more second hand Intel chips available. So if you are prepared to buy a used chip then Intel can be just as cheap as the AMD route. This is not yet true for i7 because they are quite new. But give it 6 months and there should start to be more appearing in the MM.

I'm not biased either way - I've had a number of Intels and a number of AMD's and will buy the best value at the time. My last build was using used Intel C2Q parts and it's a cracking setup for the very low cost. However I'm considering going AMD 955BE just to see what they are like.

Can't wait for the new AMD chip, due out next week!
Going to wait for some reviews before diving in though :)

Benchmarks aside, if you played a modern game or browsed the net on either without knowing which was which I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference. I think for what you've said you'd use it for you'd be happy with either option. It comes down to your budget.

the i7 is better than the 955 but if its just for gaming theres nothing between them to dominate the scene, mostly 4-10 fps difference.

if you were looking to do any encoding 3d stuff the i7 would be the choice there.
