I recall beeing told by the police the most sensible course of action is to trow your wallet some distance away, giving you pleanty of time to get away, as not all muggers wont stab you anyway.

All in all it depends on the exact situation and the demanor of the muger as well.

I'm 5'4" and I can say from experience that's it pretty easy to put a bigger man off-balance if they come at you. Probably not a good idea to try and take someone on just becuase they're smaller.
