Samsung 42"? I'm definitely not an expert, but surely if it is Samsung, bigger is better?

1080p plasmas' are like the best you can get I think.

If you don't know the answer don't post. You are probably only trying to help, but just guessing doesn't really do that :p

I would take the panasonic plasma. Samsung plasmas arn't bad, but not great either. The regza LCDs from toshiba have never impressed me in the slightest, just very average large pc monitors to me :)

Panasonic just make solid screens, that are well priced and produce a good picture. The black level will be better on the listed panny than the others too.

I'd have to agree with that. I have one of the 40" regza models, and I just don't like the picture that much. My 3 yr old Sony Bravia 40" gives a nicer picture, and that's only an HD Ready model

Thanks for the replies.

Were looking at getting the LG 37" LH3000, anyone have one or know anything about them?

Thanks.

Panasonic 42 X10 can be had for £559 on the first site I could find. I wouldhave that over the LG plus you get more inches, something the other half will enjoy :D

I have the Panny 37X10 and I can assure you it's a very good set.

Excellent blacks and a brilliant HD picture from Blu-ray, it also has extremely good SD PQ.

Problem is, its only 720p and we have blu ray and xbox 360, so would much prefer 1080p.

im in the same boat, im opting for the panasonic 37x10 seems the best 37" for the money, going by reviews and av forums.
Taking into account panasonic do plasma the best, and the viewing distance etc.

I've settled for a completely different TV.

On Tuesday i'm getting a Sony 40" W5500.

For 37" TV Whathifi.com recommends the 37" Sony W5500 and a lot of other places do too.

You can see the Panasonic 37x10 in Comet and Currys and personally there not the best looking picture wise. And you have the issue of plasma and day time tv viewing.

Wel 90% of games are only native 720p or less, thus no need for 1080p. And with a set this size and watching films with any sort of camera panning, detail is lost or cannot be resolved by human eyes unless at around 4ft from the set.

1080p is the last thing to worry about when considering a set, mainly just another marketing BS term that has some difference but is hyped up to be something which it isn't.

Good luck with the sony and getting a set without backlight bleed. Also whathifi are ****ing retards, ignore them. Also viewing a set n a random shop for a short while is no way to demo a tv, especially given the lighting conditions and crap settings. If you are going to game like a madman then get an lcd, but if you will be watch tv, playing some games, and watching films, then get a panny plasma over the sony/

1080p is certainly over-rated, a top 720 set will be better than a not-so-good 1080.
Case in point, my 3 yr old Sony 40 " HD ready TV, gives a much better and much sharper picture than a 40" Toshiba 1080 set that I just bought. That surprised me hugely. I just spent about 2 hrs with them side by side, adjusting the Tosh to get as close to the Sony as I could, but at the end of the day it just didn't happen. Sony picture quality was superior and couldn't be matched. OK, Sony has limitations - one HDMI port (yes one) but that is OK. As it happens the Tosh 40" is too big for what we bought it for, so that will be sold at a considerable loss now and we'll get something smaller

I paid £630 from a big UK retailer for my LG LH3000 47 inch.
The picture is good. Obviously more expensive sets have a better panel (for a 47 inch TV I could easily have spent double) but for the price I have got huge value for money and am very pleased with the tv.

I didn't get plasma as I game a lot. I doubt a plasma would have any problems but there is less of a worry to me with an LCD.

I personally wouldn't bother with paying the premium for a 100hz tv, as they are generally the high end models and cost much more, for a hardly any difference to a regular user.

It is a good TV and I still cannot believe I only paid £630 for a 47 inch tv.

Sorry for the hijack but I'm looking for a TV, mostly for gaming, TV and blu-rays via my PS3, but I'll also game occasionally on it through my PC. I won't be doing any work/browsing on it (got a monitor for that!), but what's PC gaming like at 720p? Is it OK? The Panny plasmas look really tempting!

What benefits do they have over a similarly priced 1080p Sony? I had always been led to believe that Sonys had pretty fantastic panels and engines...

If you are using it mainly as a gaming, pc, and blu rays, then I would really recommend a 1080p LCD screen. 1080p screens arn't vital for watching tv/sky and films, but for pc usage that extra resolution will help especially when using the desktop.

The panny plasmas are very good and have much better image retention resistance than before, but with your usage there will be a lot of static images left on teh screen for long periods of time, so going for an LCD would be a better and safer option.

Cheers mate, actually considering the 32" Sony W5500, although I'd rather have a 37" at a similar price.

How good/bad in comparison is the 37" V5500? From what I can tell the only difference is that the W series runs at 100hz...is this noticeable?

What are your thoughts on Samsungs? They seem to offer decent price/performance while, apparently, having better blacks than the Sonys. Toshibas seem to offer great prices, and some reviews say that they're the best thing since sliced bread and others say that they're a big pile of pants. And ideas on them? I'm looking particularly at the 37rv555db ; TrustedReviews seem to think it's pretty average, but all the user reviews are ace...hmm.

Argh, so much to learn! And just when I thought I was getting there with learning about PCs!!!

My turn to hijack! Is the panasonic X10 option the best budget plasma out there? I will mostly be viewing standard definition material (with the odd stint on the xbox now and then) and am seriously considering the panny, but im not too sure if any of the LCD panels offer a better image and motion quality for the cash?
