Going to visit the gf's nan again in oxford, usually we just sit by the lake, go on a boat ride, feed the ducks etc

Anything I can surprise her with? (my gf, not the nan)

:)

In Oxford from thurs to sat am

You can still surprise your gf by doing something to her na...ok..

I spent a year there and I can't really recommend much to do outside what you've said. The weather's rubbish atm which doesn't particularly help. There's a few nice restaurants there if memory serves correct - perhaps buy her a slap up meal?

Blenheim Palace is nice and about 15 mins away by car. In the city centre itself there isn't a great deal. You could go on one of the guided tours of the Colleges. Also worth going up Carfax Tower. It costs about a quid each and the views of the city are fantastic.

What sort of thing did you have in mind?

Oxford is poor tbh if the weather is bad...

TBH id go on some of the tours of colleges some of them are really good, and if shes a big fan of harry potter quite a few of the colleges were used for scenes.

For a good slap up/posh meal, your best bet is 'The Livingroom' its part of the old jail complex. I'm not sure of the price of food, but drink in there isn't over priced and its a very classy place.

If the weather is nice, go punting :)

If you are looking for a couple of nice bars to hear out to, try to head to the castle development (near the westgate centre). It's basically a converted prison and is actually pretty upmarket.

There is also the excellent University Museum to visit - I have a hernia of joy every time I go in there since the ground floor is basically a huge evolution display.

TBH Carfax is crap, your best bet for views is to walk to a park called South Park, walk to the top of that, and you can get an amazing view of Oxford and ofc pack a picknic and your sorted :)

Thanks for the info guys, was expecting more 'oxo tower' comments, but hey :p

Will probably just do all the things mentioned, besides the punting. have done it before, and I go kayaking for free on the sea at home :)

Are there any decent pubs open fairly late?

Staying in Headington, so it's a bus/taxi/long walk away

Blenheim Palace is great!! :D Very interesting learning about Churchill (and I'm not normally one that likes that kind of stuff!) but the best bit is the hedge-maze and giant chess & draughts!! :p (brought out the kid in this 34 y/o)

Also, I can heartily recommend a meal at Jamies Italian in town - note: the food was superb but I cant stand Jamie Oliver himself!!! ;) - bit of a wait as you cant book but well worth the wait!

Another vote for Blenheim, we have year passes and because we are close and live in a flat we basically use it as our own garden. :P

I can let you know how to get in via the backdoor (to blenheim not your gf ) which the locals use and would save you some cash on the door. Email is in trust.

I lived there for 4 years and its bloody boring and small.

All the cliché things like go punting or college tours... If you want to cure insomnia then sure.

Pitt Rivers and Ashmolean museums are fascinating places to visit. I'd second punting and Christ Church Meadows. Go to G&Ds for some ice-cream. Jericho isn't a bad place to go for a good pint. Some great pubs there. The Duke of Cambridge is good for cocktails and they used to have happy hour there between 4pm-7pm. Not sure if they still do? Other than that then it's the classic colleges/university buildings tours. They are all charming in terms of architecture, even the more modern ones. It'll probably be quite busy there at the moment as it's tourist season. Fortunately, I never lived there during most of the holidays, but when I did, it was a mission just to walk down Cornmarket Street! Enjoy.
