BSkyB is to launch Europe's first 3D TV channel offering movies, entertainment and sports programming in the UK next year.

The satellite broadcaster, which recently said that 3D TV could be a reality within several years, has stepped up its roll-out programme after a major boost in the numbers subscribers to its Sky+ HD set-top boxes, which are capable of broadcasting 3D services.

BSkyB, which has doubled the number of customers with Sky+ HD boxes in the last year to 1.31m, said that it will launch a channel offering 3D movies, entertainment and sport.

However, to watch 3D programming customers will also require a new "3D ready" TV set, which are expected to be on sale in the UK next year, and special glasses.

Another £10 extra a month at least with this im guessing...

Don't really see the point in this tbh. Get more HD channels first, then VOD and then 3D maybe. They should get all their own channels like Sky2 etc on HD first.

I can already imagine the guys in the high street elecrical stores rubbing their hands together with the prospect of blagging loads of people with ""you have to have the new 3d ready TV now sir"

Im quite happy with the HD content now, it was poor at first, but theres nearly 3x the number of channels on HD now.

Looking forward to seeing 3d TV, im glad i never spent a lot on my new set this year.

With any luck they'll of dropped the monthly sub for the HD channels, like they did with the SKY+ one, by the time this comes out.

I thought you couldn't do VOD over satellite? Granted, they could finally use that ethernet port on the STB...

In the Sky press release about 3D, they also said a VOD service will go live in 2010. It will more than likely be done through the Ethernet port like you say.

On the new HD boxes the Ethernet port has a green border, matching the green border on the ports on the Sky broadband routers.
