Just noticed that a few selected BBC programs are now available to view in HD on PS3.:D

BBC latest series of "Coast" is now available to watch in HD format, as it's highlighted "HD" in the information box. However, it does not render in HD as you expect in Bluray, but it does seem to stream in a much higher resolution which is noticable over the standard picture quality.

See for yourselves and reply back if you have notice any improvements;)

If it is the same as the website, then Dragon's Den is in HD (I think BBC do some sort of 720p broadcast). On my laptop it stutters and skips, will try it on PS3 when I get home.

At the moment, BBC's "Coast" seems to be the only program available in HD on the PS3 iPlayer as I can't see any other programs that has "BBC HD" highlighted in the information box.

The good news that "Coast" is in full HD glory, but only when you watch the program in 3rd of the size on the PS3. Sadly, when you select "Fullscreen" the quality does suffer. Still, it does render in a much clearer picture as there are much fewer digital artifax;)

Update!!

It's seem that the HD version of iPlayer has only just been introduced on the PS3 as we speak. So far, I have found only three programs that are available in HD format: Coast, Who do you think you are? and Dragon's den.

Both tonight's episodes (29.07.09) of Who do you think you are and Dragon's den are in HD format.

Enjoy!!:D

You are getting confused.

BBC iPlayer HD is available via PC and Mac (maybe Virgin as well). BBC HD is a TV channel.

Some shows on iPlayer show the channel they were broadcast on as BBC HD (It should say BBC1 or BBC2 or the channel it first aired on). That does not mean the version on the iPlayer site on PS3 is in HD resolution.

The reason the video is small and you have to fullscreen it is because it is the normal SD feed you are seeing. This is called the Placebo effect. This is not called HD.

As an example search for Dragon's den episode 1 2 and 3. first 2 show BBC Two as the channel, 3rd shows BBC HD. All are SD shows in the same quality. Just incorrect channel information.

Just did a comparison side by side between the ps3 and PC and the PS3 stream is definetly a lower res, though the PC 'HD' wasnt exactly super quaility.

OK I apologise, but it was confusing thnking that you are watchng HD.
However, I do believe that BBC are going to introduce their HD programs on their iPlayer via PS3, but the big question is...when?

Yeah, I think they will roll it out to all the platforms soon, I imagine the Wii and PS3 will get it at the same time as they both use the "BIG" version of the iPlayer.

I got your message on PSN, I was excited as I missed last night's Dragon's Den and thought I could watch it in HD on my PS3. Gutted :(, hence my post :)

The actual HD stuff from iPlayer page does not work on my Laptop (it does, but has to be fullscreen and the fans go mental) without some sort of skipping/stuttering issue, so this would have been my first chance to see how good it is.

Something tells me the wii may not get HD ?

LOL, just realised it does not support 720P :)

Just made me think, how do widescreen things work on the Wii? Wikipedia lists it's output as:

480p (PAL/NTSC), 480i (NTSC) or 576i (PAL/SECAM), standard 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic widescreen[95]

Does this mean that even normal iPlayer is in some stretched/cropped mode on Wii (The standard web streams are 16:9 but not anamorphic afaik)? I am assuming games work by having anamorphic widescreen?
