"Adrian Mutu must pay Chelsea £14.65m after losing his appeal against a Fifa ruling for a breach of contract."

BBC Sport.

Errrm now I know footballers earn a lot and I know signing on fees and sponsorship make up a large degree of their earnings but...I have a feeling Mutu probably can't afford this?

Is that the general consensus or do you guys think he actually has that kind of cash in a bank somewhere? I mean the guy never had big contracts at any of the clubs he's been at has he?!

I imagine even if he didn't have the full amount on him, it could either be deducted from future earnings (he's on £30-40k at Fiorentina I think) or his numerous assets (read: chateaus / villas / sports cars).

There's a huge sum of money to find even for footballers, on the other hand why should chelsea foot the bill for his mistake ?

It is a joke though, Chelsea over reacted and fired him basically, they could just as easily have fined him, not paid him any wages, and sold him whenever they wanted. Essentially they are being compensated for making a poor decision and regretting it, absolutely ridiculous.

Its like buying a toaster from wherever, you decide you don't like it but throw it out rather than take it back. They threw it out, then later asked for the money back.

Yes people should be punished and he should have been punished, but realistically he performed up to that point, he wasn't cheating using performance enhancing drugs like steroids. He could have continued to perform afterwards, or been sold easily, and really they should have just decided to not pay him during his ban as it was only during his ban he wasn't capable of playing.

Really theres been far FAR worse cheats in the game that have got away almost scot free, while realistically he's getting absolutely screwed for nothing.

chelsea only decided to take action because mutu got a massive deal going to juve for free. £14.6 million is harsh.

mutu origionally appealled it and his fine was increased quite significantly

i'd imagine it was a breach of contract which terminated his employment. Chelsea only took action when they realised he was profiting from the situation because he was out of contract there was no transfer fee so he negotiated a much bigger wage.

They want to have their cake and eat it... He should only be liable for the time that he was banned for. So the equivalent of his wages during that time.

Chelsea have every right to fire someone, but they shouldn't fire someone/terminate the contract and then expect compensation when Mutu finds himself future employment.
