Hey Guys im after a bit of advice, Im really bored with having a company car, even moreso now that the ST will be replaced with a sodding Diesel.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting a simple old car to tinker with, currently thinking about a Golf GTI mk2,always preferred the 205 GTI, but they are silly money now, but the MK2 GTI still looks pretty good and with the 1.8t transplants being popular, im thinking of going that route.

Anyways, as a base car, whats better to go for, the 8v or 16v, ive seen a few 8v'ers go for under a grand for a semi reasonable one, is that about right? is there much to go wrong with them, do they rot?

I did want a MX5, but its the wrong time of year, and tbh the extra seats would be a godsend:p

So any advice for me?

Thats what im wondering, was the suspension or anything different.

Thing initially I'd be just looking to get the standard car right as such.

16V from 1990 onwards. Ive had a few and love them. 16V is miles better. The big bumper models imo look the best. Get some G60 brakes and better suspension and it will be loads of fun.

Isnt the VR6 lump a bit heavy for the car?

It does make it a little nose heavy, but does work well if setup with decent suspension and brakes. The 1.8T is a more forgiving and tunable option, but the VR6 sounds completely awesome

Whats a decent price to pay for a reasonable MK2 8 or a 16valver? ive seen some down at 500:eek:

16v commands a premium as does 90 spec(big bumper).

Solid 8v small bumpers can be had for £600ish, big bumpers more like £750+. You're probably looking at a grand and up for a decent 16v.

If you are looking at doing an engine swap then just look for a solid shell in a colour you like. Another conversion to consider is the 2.0 16v ABF engine from the Mk3 and other VAGs of the same vintage.

Ive seen a black 8v big bumper on a H plate, a few miles on the clock but its had a cambelt and it looks solid, just needs some polish and general tidying. Its up for £650.Does that sound about right.

Kate's one was £350 with a year's MOT.

Since we've had it (1 year) we've fitted the wheels, some coilovers, new radiator, new expansion tank, and Mk3 rear calipers. Good solid little car but I find the 8v engine a bit flat for my tastes.

This.

With the 'silly money' comment you imply that you've got a tight budget, then in the next sentence talk about bunging a 1.8t in an equally expensive Golf?

Agent_Smith357 is not the thread starter and has mentioned nothing about putting a 1.8T in a Golf

if he is planning a 1.8t swap it doesnt really matter what the base car is, as he will need standalone management.

just sold my run about mk2 16v for £400 and that was quite tatty, i suspect £500 - £800 will buy a tidy project.
