I finished my degree 2 months late after spending some time in hospital and missing a major module, this had a knock on effect with my job searches - with me completing/handing in work whilst course mates were settling into their new roles in a suffering industry.
My father was diagnosed as terminal whilst my mother (post divorce) moved to deepest darkest Cornwall following the death of my grandparents. The divorce lead to me drifting away from my sister and nieces, whilst my brother emmigrated to New Zealand.
Things were looking bleak as the industry began huge layoffs and most companies ceased their graduate schemes/placements & the 'home' I used to rely on in times of comfort was tearing apart due to uncontrollable factors.
BUT...!
- I recieved great results with my degree despite said setbacks, and medically my specialist is really happy and has decided I just need to be monitored annually with look to permanently sign me off in 5 years.
- I have since setup my own business in my field, working in conjunction with a number of local firms- work is steady, varied and extremely enjoyable.
- My girlfriend and I have moved into our own flat in the area which we love and are enjoying spending quality time together.
- My father's Adenocarcinoma has ceased to grow at alarming rate and his specialists have given him the best possible future foresight that anybody in his position could ask for. He has since sold up his properties and spends his time cruising the canals of the UK, yachting around the med or undertaking huge exploratory road trips of Europe.
- My mother in Cornwall has moved in with my Auntie & Uncle, they have pooled their moneys and are now buying a gorgeous house in the area they adore- living their lives to a wonderful standard and we visit regularly for laughs and quality time.
- My brother has landed on his feet in NZ; now working for the NZDF as a senior sys-ad and ethical hacker. He works on some amazing projects and the discovery of skype means we talk and 'see' each other on a regular basis. We plan to go visit him in the near future for some much needed brother catch up whilst exploring the beautiful place he now calls home.
- My sister and I have spoken again in the last few weeks, a few texts here and a 4 hour chat on the phone. I'm travelling up to see her, her hubby and the nieces for a weekend of chatter, drinks and overdue laughs.
All of the things that were bringing me down have been turned on their head- whether it is through determination, support of family & friends or sheer luck, there are many reasons to be cheerful
