Rant: Why is everything so OBSESSED with security?

I can't give you my opinion until I have your full name, date of birth, address, mother's maiden name, inside leg measurement, and favourite cereal.

I'm on the banks side with this one. Most bank security measures help protect the customer, not just the bank. How would you feel if someone was trying to get into your account and was able to reset the password online or over the phone when they knew your name, date of birth and address?

I don't see how someone can be stupid enough to not realise they're using the wrong password three times though. Twice I can get, because you might have just gone too quickly the first time. Taking three wrong attempts to realise you're using the wrong number means you deserve to be blocked out for a couple of days ;).

Two years ago cash machine abroad swallowed my visa debit card as it went to reboot itself before I could enter the pin. Next morning I queued to the bank, for someone to retrieve the card from their machine, which a manager of the branch did in 5 minutes, and then proceeded to do 3 hour security check. She called Visa for the country, Visa abroad denied it was their card, but hinted that if it was DEBIT visa, issued abroad, then it wouldn't be in their database. I was then sent to fetch my passport and documents (two IDs required), to confirm I was the owner of the card in the first place. After I presented my IDs manager called someone in upper management trying to find any credentials of the "so called Halifax, Bank of Scotland" in the foreign country. That failed. She then called Visa again, and they suggested calling number from the back of the card. Which she did. By dialing 0845 number without any prefixes in the foreign country. So that failed too.

After that she promptly concluded the card is fake and I was trying to scam their bank, but I lost my patience, pulled my mobile, called my girlfriend in UK to give me international number from Halifax web page, dialed that number on my phone. Through the security checks. Random questions. Size of shoe. Grandfathers maiden name. Telephone banking pin. Then press 1's, press 5's, to come back to main menu, press all numbers in the same time. Finally reached the customer services, asked the guy to hold on and passed the phone over to the stupid manager of the foreign bank. She then started describing the circumstances in half broken English over the phone for 20 minutes, shortly disappeared in the back, and returned with a pile of paperwork, returned my phone and said that everything was sorted, she just needs to write protocol descibing the events and protocol of returning my card.

After we finished all the typing, my card was returned to me and I asked if I could finally have those 100 euros I wanted in the first place last evening. We went to the counter, she swiped my card, looked at me puzzled and said "I'm sorry sir, you card is denied and the terminal says I am obligated to destroy the card". WAIT! I screamed. Pulled the phone, dialed number to UK, through the security check, throught the random questions, through the endless loop of press 5's and press 1's, to the customer services, just to be told "I'm sorry sir, but we were informed this morning that your card was found in a foreign country, so we blocked it for you." "But I am in the foreign country, the card is in my hand", "Oh don't worry sir, we'll post the new card for you it should be with you in less than 10 days". "But how am I supposed to get back home" "If you walk in to any HBOS branch with your old card I'm sure they will be able to help you", "But I am in a foreign country, there is no HBOS here", "In that case sir, the card shoudl be waiting for you when you come back" "But how am I supposed to come baAAAAAAAAARHHHHHHHH"

Two years ago... "But how am I supposed to come baAAAAAAAAARHHHHHHHH"

LOL that is horibble to read but great at the same time - I've not had anything that mental happen. Although I do have to phone barclays every 3 months and tell them that I'm still on "holiday" in australia, so if any transactions come through please let them pass.

cos the banks lose millions due to fraud, thats why they are so obsessed:rolleyes:

Except they arent. If I forget and dont enter my pin correctly at a chip and pin machine, then you just sign for it.

Pointless.
As they can just COPY the signature from the back of the card. Why even bother with chip and pin. Might as well just write the sodding pin number on the back of the card .

I hate the "Halifax secure" thing. You basically have to enter an extra password every time you buy something online, but the password NEVER works, even if you know it's correct. So, to fix it, all you have to supply is your name and date of birth, and you can reset it. Surely, if someone has got hold of your card details, they know your name and DOB as well? And to top it all off, when you reset the password, to the same one you THOUGHT it was, it says "this password is currently in use". But I just entered it and you said it was wrong! FFFFFFUUUUUUU

Works for me, never had a problem.

I like halifax as its secure enough, but doesn't need that annoying card reader some banks use.

Yeah, mine is secure, I've never had any fraud, I just don't see the point in an additional password that can be reset by simply giving your name and date of birth. Seems pointless to me.

My mum is with RBS and has that card reader thing, seems to work fine. I can see how it'd be annoying if you buy stuff online while you're oot n aboot, but it's faster for her to buy something than it is for me, because it only takes a swipe of the card. And it's optional, whereas, as far as I can tell, this "verified by visa" thing isn't.
