I've been building my new pc all of this morning.

My cpu temp is listed as being 98 degrees. I'm using as5 and did put a reasonable amount on. The cpu temp is not changing and is immediately 98 from off into in the bios. I have scythe heatsink with a noctua 120mm.

Faulty sensor on cpu or mobo? Or do I need to reseat?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you tried touching the heatsink while the computer is on? Have you made sure there are no bubbles or dust or other residue between the paste and the heatsink? Is the fan blowing the right direction to cool the heatsink? Is the heatsink firmly seated?

thats hot. damn hot. in fact it's so hot that if there was a little guy in orange robes stood nearby he'd burst into flames. It's that hot.

I'd try reseating first with less thermal paste, ensure that the fan is blowing through the cooler towards the rear exhaust and that the cooler is sufficiently pressured to the cpu.

I used the akasa tim cleaner on both cpu and hsf before applying the as5. Even if the fan wasn't mounted correctly the hsf is huge and wouldn't expect the cpu to be 98 after 30 seconds... The fan is pointing the correct way and the there is another 120 exhaust right next to the cooler...

Did you touch the heatsink to test how hot it is (try touching the fins and if it has heatpipes try touching the heatpipes where they come into contact with the base)

The fins were cool to touch. I do not have temp probe. I'm going out for a couple of hours. Keep the suggestions coming though ;).

Put the heatsink on properly is about the only real solution. If the heatsink is entirely cool to the touch, it is not making contact with the CPU properly or at all.

When you say in the OP you put a "reasonable amount" of AS5 on, just how much exactly and how was it applied?

Right I took the hsf off and the cpu and base of the heatsink had a thin layer of as5 across the entire surface...

I have an abit ip35 and it looks like I need to do a bios update. A quick found other users with over 100 and 247 degrees :P. I'll do a bios update and see what happens...

have you accidently overclocked it to 7ghz without realising what you've done? :p

That is a frightening temp you've got there though!
