Card only works in one slot, other card only works in other slot...!?

I had a XFX 4850 XXX that replaced a HD2900XT.
It was ****. Crashed a lot. Sent it back.

Previous to the upgrade, 2900 was in the top PCI-E slot. Then the 4850 was in same slot. After sending back 4850, I placed 2900 in top slot and the POST yells out the "No VGA" beep sequence :(

Card works ok in the bottom slot... the replacement 4850 worked ok in top slot, then that one went back too and I got a refund, 2900 still only works in bottom slot.

Problem is, the bottom slot doesn't give enough room for the water tubing to bend properly (dont have the screws for the original cooler so stuck with the loop) which means air forms in the slight kinks and the card has started overheating.

Does anyone have any idea why the card wont work in the top slot? :(

Any help appreciated!!

Not that I can see, have reseated the card and still no dice.
I don't think it's overheating, last freeze was only 50°c.
Just tried to boot PC, it posts but died while loading windows, just froze on a black screen :(

Edit: oops! posting from the mrs' pc, hence name change :P This is still HJ.

Haha, can you get into safe mode? It could be a driver conflict, if you can get into safe mode completely remove the driver and start fresh.

No, I dont think its a driver issue because with the card in the other PCI slot it doesn't even POST :(
the other card worked fine in that slot though *shrug*

just my thought, does the gpu require a power connector plugged in , could that be the problem.

Yes, but it's plugged in and works fine in the bottom slot.

as i asked above, have u updated the bios?

last time i checked it was up to date, but that was several months ago, I will check again.

I thought you said above you got it to post but it failed to get into windows?

Sorry, I'm being confusing. The card doesn't POST in the top slot, in the bottom slot it does, but has random crashes that I thought were overheating. I wanted to try it in the top slot, but it wont POST at all, ever, in that slot. Previous to my upgrading to a 4850 then back again, the 2900 was in the top slot fine.

Is there a possibility you've damaged a component on the card when you were removing it? You could have popped a resistor off or snapped the leg on a capacitor given that it is now acting funny since the switch
