Guys, I need some advice please, guitar cable needs replacing as there was a loud hum coming from the amp and when ever I move the cable the 'static moves' now it has completley knackered - no sound at all

What sort of cable do I get? a cheap one?

NEVER EVER, buy cheaper cables.

It ruins the whole tone of our (in)expensive guitar and (in)expensive amps.

I always wonder what gauge of strings/brands people use i have always used D ADDARIO EXL120 XL 9-42 SUPER LIGHT, been reading that Ernie Ball strings are meant to be ok what do you guys use etc.

I use Ernie Paul pure nickel 10-46's on my 'E' axes and on my 'Eb' guitar Not even Slinky 12-56's!

Ernie Ball Super slinky (The pink packet. It's the same gauge as the d'addario's you've been using. Always got on well with Ernie Ball's myself.

Replaced no name strings with The super slinkys and I'm sure my Yamaha 122J sounds a lot better than it did, even to play un-amped it's much louder...is this possible?

Thats some amazing picking. I have only recently got back into practicing on a regular basis so I'm no where near that. Working hard on my picking.
I started on off many years ago playing classical and got up to grade 8 and then stopped. I've always struggled to pick correctly cause I always used my fingers. For years I held the pick wrong and it really affected my speed. It's only since I changed how I held it that my playing is finally coming together. All those years of frustration. Now im using a metronome and for once, I feel like I can play the stuff I've always wanted to. Really inspiring to watch people.

Something you guys could advise on, I do a chops warmup exercise in first position. Starting with 2 fingers over 2 frets and move to 3 over 3 frets ect, when I practice over 4 frets my little finger is muting the string underneath I find that I have to really push my wrist far forward to arc the hand to get the little finger to go 90º to the neck. Should I do my best to fix this now or will time and better muscle control and experience fix this? or am I being to anal about it as I'm only learning to play 3 months.

I'm trying to learn bark at the moon and I'll see the light tonight. Trying to get that chugging sound. I just can't get it up to speed. I'm using guitar pro. I get them up to a certain speed then the next day I just can't do it. It's remebering to stay relaxed and calm.I always end up hunched over the guitar squirming lol.

Is there a different picking technique when playing riffs like that compared to playing a lead run?

The most important thing I can say if you want to get good at that downpicking is do NOT tense your arm up, I played like that for about a whole year and wondered why I ran out of steam 1minute into Master Of puppets, it has to come from the wrist, its been a challenge for me to get out of that bad habit :|

Don't I know it. I've struggled with tensing up for years. Now and again it creeps back in. I think I'm trying to up the speed of my practising too quick.

Thanks for the tips, I've noticed thumb positioning helps a lot I'm a bit tense in thumb movement would need to relax, I still crush the strings to the fret board at times which leaves the thumb hard to move.

2+ years of self taught guitaring (ie tabs and Metallica 24/7) I'm considering looking for music theory lessons, my pianist friend keeps pressuring me to like it's a tabboo that i'm playing an instrument without the level of understanding he has of what I'm playing.
I wasn't convinced at first but now i'm delving more into learning solos I starting to think it would be a good idea, rather than look for a guitar tutor.
Anyone think it would be time better spent with a tutor teaching me to properly sweep pick rather than learning depths of theory behind it ? Not too sure what to expect tbh out of theory. I can only imagine that if I was to start making my own music it'd be a lot easier, thats about it.

Sweep picking is such an advanced technique I would honestly say you are best off avoiding it, or at least better off avoiding taking it seriously, until further down the line. However, a good teacher can do you wonders so I would investigate that further.

Quite an easy song to play (even though i made mistakes) but a very good song nevertheless

Using a PGM301 and the clean channel on a laney VC50 which is boosted in the verse / bridge with a Fulltone OCD V.3

I appreciate my guitar isn't that loud but hopefully you can hear me

Extra points for those who can tell me the final riff I play
