What are the chances of getting a refund on my laptop after 5 months?

I bought an Acer laptop in March of this year and it is by far my most regrettable purchase ever. It's already been back to Acer twice in the 2 months I've had it and now I've just noticed that a lovely crack has appeared around one of the screw fixings.

I'm sick of it and I know that when my 1 year warranty is up that I'll be screwed and will probably end up with either an expensive bill or a dead laptop.

Anyone had a similar experience?

I would go direct to Acer UK with this. They have a really, really, good customer service department and assuming your crack wasn't caused by you, I'm sure they'll be reasonable.

Go back to where you purchased it. If its faulty they will replace it now as they had their chance to repair it.

Yeah, speak directly to Acer. Doubt they'll refund you, but you might manage a brand new one out of it...

I've already dealt with them before and I have to say that their customer service is pretty terrible.

If it was just one problem that I was having then it wouldn't be so bad but it's just a terrible in every way.

It overheats all the time, there's a crack in the casing, the battery lasts 20 mins maximum on the lowest power setting, one of the monitor hinges rattles, the part of the case where I rest my wrist creaks and rattles, I'm just generally annoyed at how ripped off I feel.

Sale of Goods Act 1979 - Section 14 said:
Implied terms about quality or fitness

(2) Where the seller sells goods in the course of a business, there is an implied term that the goods supplied under the contract are of satisfactory quality.

(2A) For the purposes of this Act, goods are of satisfactory quality if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of any description of the goods, the price (if relevant) and all the other relevant circumstances.

(2B) For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—

(a) fitness for all the purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied,

(b) appearance and finish,

(c) freedom from minor defects,

(d) safety, and

(e) durability.

If a fault appears with the product within 6 months, it is assumed by law that the fault was there when you bought it.

Mention the above to the retailer, making the complaint up to the highest management if you need to, and you should get it taken care of :)

Don't bother with the warranty that comes with the laptop, your rights are protected by statute.

Thanks for that Nitefly, at least now I know what my rights are and I can safely say that this laptop isn't fit for purpose.

The model isn't even sold anymore so I wonder what the outcome will be.

You are entitled to demand a refund :)

Remember, the action has to be taken before 6 months of receipt, so move quickly.

I'd try and get it replaced again tbh and make a bit of a scene about it...

My brother's acer laptop developed a fault where the right hand quarter of the screen was all brighter colors than it should be with some random lines running down it and a dark vertical line where this started, on returning it to acer the "repaired" laptop had bad scratches around the lid and after a couple of days the display started showing random red and green lines... on complaining acer upgraded him to the next model up - which has run flawless for a few years now.
