Hi

Firstly sorry, if this is in the wrong thread. I couldn't find the perfect home for it so popped it here.

I think my email address has been hijacked or something. Twice now, my contacts have been sent emails purporting to be from me, which of course thay are not (I do not sell viagra). The email is, unsurprisingly, not in my sent items, but looks as if it is from me.

I am going to get in touch which Yahoo but wondered if anyone else has had this happen, or if there is a solution. I can't think of one. :(

Many thanks

Paul

It could just be your address has been spoofed, someone else sent the emails but made it look like it was from you. Happens loads, i wouldnt worry too much.

Cheers. Thanks for your reassurance Masterk

Seeing that the message was not in my sent items made me a bit less concerned, in the sense that my account had not actually been hacked. However I still have some concerns.

Firstly, my friends think I have changed job and am selling Viagra.

Secondly, what if it keeps happening on a regular basis?

Cheers

Access the account on a different computer and change the password completely if you are still concerned.

It does sound like it's been spoofed however, which can happen to anyone. Someone else's contact list might have been compromised.

Yes, I think that is probably what happened. Hopefully there won't be too may more using my address.

if you have been or sent email as CC then its probably been spoofed to look like you and the people in the CC are sending each other email.

Netsky Worm?

Some years ago I got an email from Kuoni stating that the email I had just sent them contained a virus. I hadn’t sent them an email.

A few days later I received a number of emails from people I had never heard of with messages such as: The menu you wanted is attached. Your photos are attached and my favourite one purporting to come from the CIA stating my IP address had been identified on 40 illegal sites and I was to complete the attached proforma. NAV destroyed the attachments as Netsky Worm/Virus.

All emails were 3 hours ahead of GMT. I have friends in Kenya (GMT+3) and they used to send me emails, they would write out their messages in long hand and take them to an Internet Shop, where the worker would type them up and despatch them to me for a small sum of money. I could only assume that the Kenyan computer didn’t have up-to-date AV and somehow got compromised. My only course of action was to get on to my email provider and change my email address and password. Unfortunately I had to stop sending emails to my Kenyan friends and vice versa.

If it's your contacts that have been sent e-mails from what seems to be your e-mail address then it is most likely to be an account hijack.
