I feel really bad now, you both sound quite offended. I apologise unreservedly that you took it as offensive rather than constructive.

I agree that cable colour is irrelevent. Orange seems a strange choice, but Gigabyte often do things I don't understand with colours so I sympathise. I bought a load of silver sata cables for my first build, lord knows why. I hadn't slept much before this decision.

Ahh, it is the 8 pin one. That makes sense, should have thought of this. I'm considering an extension cable for mine, but don't really want to degrade the voltage for appearance sake. I was suggesting behind the steel sheet rather than behind the motherboard tray for that one.

Sata cables behind the tray should be fine, they're appreciably thinner than the standoffs. I think before using mine like that all the time I'm going to wrap them in foil, doing something sensible about electrical shorts
 
No worries m8, we both very much appreciate you very constructive advice (I was tempted to suspend the HHDs for this build, just to see it in action :) )

We will definitely improve the cable routing in the future, but this a pretty temporary build - and may change radically when the water loop and other bits come in a month or two. Also, I think we will take your advice and put the smaller cables under the motherboard and those that don't round the back.

An 8 pin extension cable seems to be a required piece of kit now - every system I have built with the PSU at the bottom had problems getting the 8 pin in without it looking terrible.
 
That sounds about right. I've got the psu at the top, so don't suffer from this. I wonder if theres any cooling pros/cons; I cant cut a blowhole but I think thats about it.

There's still time to suspend the drives, well worth doing I think. Can you remove the 3/5" cage? I'm wondering if you could fit a radiator in its place (I ask because its exactly what ive done in my case). I really enjoy cable routing, I accept that this is strange. So far the only parts Im happy with are my hard drive and floppy disk, and ive been thinking about where to put things for ages. I might find a photo actually :)

That is the only finished part of my build, and I'm considering taking it apart to make the visible length of tubing 2mm longer

We have recieved the final order with replacement parts. We are going to install the sound padding (not that'll help much) tomorrow, and we have the touch button working!

Pics to follow tomorrow night. :)
 
Okay guys I apologise. I did mean to post this earlier but... GTAIV was calling!

How is the noise from the main case (i'm guessing furniture and putting it below the desk should quiet things a bit)?

Also, how are you finding the Dell 2408WFP monitor?

I gotta mention this: props on the GTA:SA poster, probably the most useful piece of wall furnishing in my own room :)

I know it's on, but that's about as much noise as she gives me.

The 2408 is great. Great investment! I dunno how I went all this time without a VA panel.

I have a GTAIV poster next to the GTASA. And on that note I got a 6 star evasion on GTAIV!
 
Nice, forgot about this thread. Stable at 3.8? I may be asking for pointers in a couple of days, just waiting on some ram to finish my build

Aye, stable. Just ran OCCT for 7 and a half hours. Max temp, 67. Average of 64. About 40 at idle. The voltage is a little high at 1.25, however. I think I can drop it to 1.23 if I want to.

I had to cut the multipler down to 19 however, so that I could get the RAM at 1600 MHz. Timings at stock, 8-8-8-24 with cmd at 2. 1.64 V.

I like your cooler, I think it is Megatron in disguise, it even has the Decepticon logo on it!

I understand. I have been fiddling with my system over the weekend, added a permanent IP assoication, and got filesharing and stuff working. I'm also thinking of pulling in my TV as a second moniter.
 
I bought a 28" beaten to hell crt for £30 and put my N64 on it. Best idea I've had in a long time.

I am happy to say I have an i7 system working. It is not pretty, and in some senses is not in a case. Setting up to install a new copy of windows since it didn't cope well with the move, at which point I'm hoping to be wowed by its performance.

Really impressed with the stock cooler, its a lot quieter than they used to be. Its also massive, going to do me just fine for a bit. The back panel esata thing from gigabyte has ridiculously short cables, its not possible to use the damn thing if you need the lower pci slots. I take back previous bitching about cable management.

What're you doing about airflow over the chipset? It looks brilliantly set up for a cooler that blows air downwards, and terribly for a tower heatsink. I'll see if I can get a photo, quite amused by just how chaotic the build is
 
Hi Jon, nice to hear you have an i7 system working. One of my top programs I use is WinRAR and the CPU just makes mincemeat out of it, really quick :)

The stock cooler is not too bad, about 3 times bigger than the one that came with my Q9550 and a better fan. Definitely a solid stopgap measure.

Hehe, yea thems eSATA ports are annoying, probably need a pair of SATA cable extensions to route them well. I only added the blooming panel for completeness - the single eSATA on the mobo IO panel (not to mention the front one) should be enough for most occasions.

TBH, we haven;t really bothered with spending much time/effort cooling the chipset. I guess with the X58 offloading the good stuff like the memory controller onto the CPU, the heat dissipation is reduced. Neither of have any problems with chipset temps (checked with Everest), which is very nice. But if watercooling was on the cards - beefing up the chipset cooling would make sense, assuming the airflow over the components is low.

If you have not already bought a CPU cooler, you may want to have a look at the Corsair H50 if you haven't already. I'm not sure its as good as the megahalems, but it costs the same (when you add a noctua fan) and it is supposed to be quite a bit quieter (which i'm sure you'd appreciate). Don't get me wrong, the Megahalems is brilliant- but this corsair thing just hit my radar and it looks quite a bit better than existing sealed watercooling kits.
 
It's back! Well not really, but I bought some new hard drives (4x Samsung EcoDrives F2s), a new Sound Card (Asus Xonar D2X), and a second hand (faulty, trying to get LG to repair it out of warranty, no luck so far) Blu-Ray rewriter.

I have changed the gallery location cause, well, Picasa integrates better with Lightroom.

And here it is.
