Hey,

This is my first post on the forum so im sorry if there is already a thread that has covered my problem, did have a quick butchers, but im at my wits end.

Anywho to the point. About a month or 2 ago i bought myself 2 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-187-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat= along with 2 Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCS 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express). oh and also upgraded the power supply to a OCZ 600w. im running 1 system on a Vista32 OS and the other on a Win7 OS.

My problem is everytime i seem to play games, mainly ARMA 2 at the moment, i get white squares flashing up on the screen. At a rough guess they're 0.5cm in size. I've updated my drives to 9.7 and tried everything from 8.5 to current but still running into the same prob. Sadly it not just isolated to that game, so i can rule out possible bugs. I dont think the system is over heating either, it sits at a decent 40c (at least i think thats decent) at hits 50c during game play. i would post some screens but the Print Screen doesnt work in-game. If needed i can post a copy of my Dxdiag

Any help, tips or even a solution would be great.

Many thanks

sorry, it seemed like it was crossfire related :)

are you using the CCC software to change the clock speeds?

btw welcome to the forums :)

lol cheers and no prob, reading it back i didnt really make myself clear.

To be honest with you the only thing ive touched on the CCC is the fan speed. Ive had bad luck in the past when it comes to touching most other settings, so i try to steer clear of that unless i have a guide infront of me. Its also been several years since ive used ATI cards so im a bit rusty with the CCC

When I ran my 2 4850's in crossfire I let CCC choose the speeds and when playing HL2 I got what you described.

The fault was that there wasn't enough power. That was off a 550watt psu and there was two cards.

let ccc arrange the speeds and see if that does anything

Right i checked ATI Overdrive tab and hit default just to make sure ive not accidentaly moved the sliders. The GPU clock is showing at 665MHz and the Memory Clock is at 993MHz thats the default CCC settings. Just tried a few games but still no luck.

oh yea it shouldn't have changed if you only changed the fan speed.

Just select the ccc to assess the GPU so it changes the clocks, it might change it to something more suitable :)

also does this problem happen on both systems or it it specific to this card?

we would be able to get a better idea of the issue if you took a screenshot/picture of it happening.

Its the same over both systems, at first i thought it was a faulty card but after i got Win7 and the 2nd card installed on the 2nd rig i was hit with the same problem. i know both rigs can run single 4850 setups, it requires a 450w power supply and im using a 600. unless there is a faulty batch but that seems highly unlikely.

okay, just tried HDMI ports on my TV and still no joy. Ive managed to take a screenshot, its not the best but it gives you some idea as to what im babbling on about :p

I did try however to check the "Force Component Video Detection" box which seemed to reduce the about those squares flicker, but doesnt fix it entirely.

try underclocking the card, that way you'll know if it's a fault card.

i'm getting flicking objects but this is in most dx10 games in crossfire

Cheers for that gareth,

Ive just underclocked the Vista and Win7 cards, given them a proper test and that seemed to have resolved the problem.

So now the stupid question... is that a good or bad thing? >_<

bad.. most likely faulty card...

how far did u underclock them?

what brand of psu u using?

edit: sorry i just seen u already said OCZ 600w :o

i dropped the GPU Clock to 580MHz and the Memory Clock to 900MHz on both cards, from the default CCC settings (GPU:665MHz and Mem 993MHz).

If they are faulty i guess its just a matter of sending them back? if that it is the case would it be worth switching to an Nvidia seeing as i have a bit more experiance with them.

it does sound like they are faulty..

yes just rma them back...

has for switching to an Nvidia card, if u feel more happyer with a Nvidia card then go for it.

Cool thanks for the help gareth and everyone else that posted. I'll get right on it tomorrow. Should have signed up and posted sooner, would have saved myself a month of frustration lol.

Thanks again for all the help. :D

edit: any pointers as to what nvidia card would work with the power supply im using. will have a look at their site in the mean time.

ah okay, well its better than having nothing at all. Would the retailer honour the warrenty or would it be the manufacturer id need to contact?

edit: i work in retail so i know retailers can get silly about a warrenty. Wouldnt they do a refund on a faulty item?
