Hi guys,

I was going to get a HD 4770 as they seem like very good cards and use hardly any power it seems, however looking at the prices of the 4770 (£80 and out of stock!!) compared to the 4870 (£93) I'm leaning towards the 4870.

What would the difference in power consumption be for the 4870? At idle and at load I guess, also does the 4870 get as hot as I heard it can? And the size puts me off too.... but it's still tempting :(

Any advice would be great, thanks!!

Ah, yeah I am very tempted by it!

I have two monitors running at 1680x1050, but haven't really ever got into 'dual monitor gaming' or whatever (or even if it's possible :P) so yeah just 1680 x 1050 I think

Cheers

I got the Black Knight variant of the 4870 a month ago, and I'm very happy with it.

Noticeably louder than the 7800 GTO that replaced it, but now I can play 1680 x 1050 in everything - Fallout 3 in full detail for instance, and it's saved me a PC upgrade for now.

I'm only on the very earliest Core2Duo chip, so there's some CPU headroom if I wanted it but this card seems to fly at the moment, and goes from 45 degrees to around 58 after a hard gaming session.

I was worried about power consumption, but my 370 watt supply seems fine - despite what it said on the box as requirements for the card.

Hope that helps..

Ahh, yeah many thanks guys - the 4870 looks fantastic, and very good value for money, but the noise/power issues do make me want to get a 4770... but if they're not in stock, I guess the 4870 wins by default :D

You can get a 4770 for less than £80.

XFX, but i have an Antec 902 case and have the fans on medium setting, and that's still not loud for me. I guess it's personal preference at the end of the day.
