I went to see friends in Essex yesterday driving from Surrey into Kent and then Essex. As soon as you get through the Dartford tunnel every driver becomes over-agressive, chavy and speedy. I swear the average speed on all roads increases by about 20% the second you cross the county boarder and nobody is happy in anything but the fast lane, unless under-cutting and preferably keeps a distance of about six inches between cars.

Not to mention the number of chavy cars! All the cars whether high end or hatchback are chavved to the max with body kits and personalised plates.

Have others noticed this in Essex?

I felt like I needed a wash when I got home;)

Essex seems to be a very image-conscious part of the world, you only need to go out on a saturday night to see this.

Thats all car chavving comes down to - proving your petrol-penis is bigger than your mates.

I wouldn't say so. The only places I drive are central London, N and NW London, and Essex. I would say aggressive driving is much more common in N and NW London than it is in Essex, it's a pretty slow pace of life there in comparison.

when you cross the Bridge you right in the heart of Purfleet / Grays Tilbury and Avely, chavvy areas. Add to that your at lakeside shoppign centre, full of dodgy women drivers, is bound to be bad, not all of essex is like this.

i live in upminster in essex, and its crammed with OAP driving at 22 mph not matter what teh speed limit.

Essex isn't much worse than anywhere else. Obviously it has a few big towns which are hot spots for the "cruising scene"... but every county has those.

The roads in Essex are awesome though. In some areas, it's like driving in a foreign country where bitumen is abundant. And that's before you discover the back roads.

yup, they drive like utter morons. they know no different

essex is the iq void of the entire country (driving ability wise) from what i can tell

The thing is, most southerners stay in the south when most of the rest of the country travel around the country and us business types have to go 'dan saff' because saddly, it's where much of our business is done. London and the SE has anything you might want in terms of 'stuff' or 'facility' but really it has a vibe I simply can't stand. I am a countryside type at heart and can't stand the pace of life down there. I probably spend 3 days a week in the City or Canary Wharf and that is more than enough and Essex is simply where many Londoners go each night.

Sweaping yes, but lots of foundation I feel.

As a country boy at heart I think there is some truth in that but would go further and say that Essex is where the barrow boys, lower end of the city boy market and east enders made good, or not so good, go at night and is therefore an exaggeration in terms of showiness. The driving in surrey really is different and many of us (myself not included anymore) are in London by day.

Hmm my road is mostly german machinery, VAG, BMW, Mercedes...

Yes there are a lot of barry boys who descend upon saaarrrfend on an evening but this is true of many places. Aggressive driving (or just plain bad driving) always happens at Dartford toll booths, its eleventy billon lanes in 4 lanes and very much a passage by right to beat every other bugger to the right one you needed.

Not all can be fortunate (or wealthy enough) to live in Surrrahhh ;)

I can't stand big cities or the pace of London, people are so ignorant and I swear they wouldn't p**s on you in the street if you were on fire. I'm lucky enough to live out here and it's very chilled, although the drivers are absolute nut cases.

i dont think its ignorance, its fear. people are terrified of speaking to other people, look at the buses/tubes/trains. its pathetic. get on a metro into manchester and its a different story. southeners have serious issues. you dont get customer service in shops, you cant stop and ask someone for directions in the street. thye cannot drive to save their lives.

i am from essex, lived here nearly almost all my life. im looking to move north again, the people are different (better)
