Ok, so i'd never played guitar hero until Saturday (i know i know) - but thought it was great fun... question is there are so many out there now that if I was to get me a copy, which is the "one to get"? does it come down solely to which was has the songs you like, or are the later games just better in any way?

It varies so much per person but the bread and butter factors for people are generally.. the songs and the instruments..

Coincidentally I bought GH:WT at the weekend and I am loving the tracks. I would say this and GH3 are my favourites by far. Rock Band has some decent tracks but I prefer GH over it.

I'd also go for GH3 but if you can find GH2 for cheap then go for that first maybe, either way you'll have fun :P

Game wise:

GH2>RB2>RB1>GH1>GH80'S>GH3>GH:A>GHWT/M (Both as bad as eachother, read: rubbish)

Guitar wise

RB>GH3>GH2

The only reason i'm not a fan of GH3/A/WT/M is because;

A) The gameplay is horrendus, doesn't even feel like i'm hitting the notes
B) They're too easy, I can now pass TTFAF consistently, and have almost not trouble on any other songs, Whereas Visions still kicks my ass on RB2
C) The fanboys who complain about Rock Band copying, when since 3, it's the other way round.

If the current GH's played like GH2, then all would be good (yes, including the no band thing).

As per the norm, i'll probably get moaned at for GH bashing now.

I'd agree pretty much completely with that game wise. Biggest problem with GH2 is the lack of songs once you really get into it though, which is where RB2 takes off big time.

Guitars I'd say

GH3>RB>GH2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Any third party guitar>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fisher Price my first strummer>>>>>GHWT

Pretty much agree with creature although I use the GH3 Les Paul.

GH3 was the first one I played and I loved it but now the games have moved on so much and having one small setlist that unlocks as you pass a song doesn't really cut it anymore. It's fine to have to play now and then but you need far more depth now.

I could never hammer on at all on GH3 until I played Rockband. Now I can sometimes get through mad HOPO sections on gh3 and I'm damn sure all I'm doing is quick random button pushing.

GHWT I bought on a whim, couldn't even be bothered to finish hard career. Few months later I thought I'd buy it again to see if I could get into it. Sold it again, utter filth in comparison to even GH3 and GH2.

I wouldn't touch another GH game until they tighten up the timing and reduce the notes per second to compensate.

The DLC on rockband consistently destroys all other games in any genre and console.

The only reason to buy a GH game over Rockband is because the game is usually available cheaper, you can use the discs to scare the birds away from your vegetable patch.

For me these games come down to tracklists. I'd say go for whichever track listing is most appealing to yourself.
I play these game lightheartedly and never look for too much depth, just having a good time strumming along to the tracks I like.

I use the Rock Band one the most, and I hate the click of strum bars. I use the explorer on occasions, but very rarely now.

Whwn I use mine the volume is so loud I can't hear the strum bar. When I take it to work thats the thing most people complain about. They say the strum click is irritating :D

I did prefer the Fender strum on the original RB guitar, I just didn't like the frets, which is why I've been so desperate to get my hands on a RB2 guitar :(

For me that couldn't be further from what makes a great game. Charting is what makes the game fun for me. So many bands from RB and GH that I've never given the time of day before these games. I could list 20 or more CDs that are now in my collection after playing these games.

Then you have Oasis who I love and the songs are bland and wrong for Rockband guitar.

Thats why I always check out the charting before I buy a pack or song. On paper you can make an awesome setlist that just doesn't play well (and call it ghwt ;) )

Breaks a lot - enough that activision didn't notice for a long time that it was possible to get a free guitar out of the warranty dept. by filling in a web form without any proof of purchase, not even the guitar code...
