ATI HD 4850

ah okay, well its better than having nothing at all. Would the retailer honour the warrenty or would it be the manufacturer id need to contact?

edit: i work in retail so i know retailers can get silly about a warrenty. Wouldnt they do a refund on a faulty item?
its after the 28days so u won't get a refund..

are they from ocuk? if so u can rma them to ocuk or the manufacturer

ATi has nvidia beat on price to performance ratios in every price bracket at the moment.

If you want an nVidia equivalent, expect to pay more money for the same (sometimes less) performance.

What I find bizarre is how it seems to be both cards in separate computers that have an issue. That's pretty unlikely thing to happen.

If you're having the exact same issue on two different cards (yeah they're the same model, but obviously different cards and PCs) it's something to do with the whole set up in my opinion.

Except for ARMA what other apps do you have this problem in? Have you tried stress-testing the PCs to see what the actual problem is?

Ah cool, well thats good to know.

As for other apps, its mainly games such as Dawn of War 2, Empire Total War and World in Conflict. Those are really the only games ive tried to date and it just seems to be with games, other apps run fine. Overclockers thought it was the power supply, so i upgraded that and was told the same by the manafacturer along with other troubleshooting solutions.

But i couldnt aggree more, it is majorally bizarre. Cant say ive stress-tested the PC's only thing i did was underclock the card and test each game, changing the graphics, as certain settings would send the issue into over drive.

wouldnt have a clue where to start with stress-testing. My boss at work usually points me in the right direction :p

Have you tried raising the fan speed in CCC? I've seen similar effects when the card was getting a bit toasty, around the 80c mark under load. Just whack the fan speed up to 100% and try the games again, if they both stop artifacing, then heat is your prob.:)

but thats not the point tbh, the cards should work at stock speeds and stock fan speed. so it clearly as faulty cards because he's get artifacing at stock speeds and stock fan speed.

If it turns out to be a heat related issue, it might be down to insufficient case cooling. Secondly, if he sends it back to the maker and they test it on an open bench, it might work fine and not show up any anomalies, so they'll it send it straight back as serviceable. Always best to do as much testing first to find out the exact cause if possible so at least the op has the option to maybe reseat the cooler or sort out his cooling. If its none of these then its an rma, no question. Also if it goes back, clean it first, there was a thread running here about a vidcard that was rma'd back to evga and their reason for not replacing it was that the cooler was clogged with dust causing a failure..

reseatting the cooler would void he's warranty. also he said it goes to 50c under load which im guessing is the gpu if it is then its fine, thats 11c lower then mine..

Cheers for the replys,

So, ive spent most of today testing this system out as much as possible. Crancking the CCC fan setting up to 100% doesnt really make much of a difference sadly. At the moment im keeping my card underclocked and that seems to solve the problem altogether.

I ended up downloading an app that would track the temperature. With the fan at 100% the system was hitting 62c. Underclocked ,with the fan at 100%, i was getting 49-51c. Really im guessing it has something to do with it getting to hot. I think i new fan may be in order. At least they dont cost an arm and a leg.

62c is very good mate, if it was 80c+ then yes it was be heat issues.

my cards goes to 61c under load even sometimes 70c.

so i really don't think yours is a heat issue.

have you tried underclocking the core and the ram seperately to see which causes it? I have a gainward 4850 with base stats 700/1100, i can put the core up to 750 without issue but just moving the ram to 1105 causes ati driver crashes/black screen issues.

As "gareth170" says, if the card won't run at stock speeds with the fan 100%, then its rma time and I doubt an aftermarket cooler will help that much when you return the clocks to stock. If the card will run ONLY when its underclocked then its faulty. At least you've proved that if they (the manufacturer) test the card on an open bench at stock speeds then its gonna fail and they should send you a replacement. If you do rma the card, clean it out of dust first just to make sure.:)

EDIT:, three posts appear while typing this :)

Thanks for all your help guys, just got off the phone with Overclockers and im sending them back and should be getting 2 replacement cards. Still amazed that it was 2 cards in 2 different systems that were faulty but hay hoo.

Thanks again for all your help and quick replys :D
