pug 205 electrics..

my sister has a 205 and it failed its MOT on bulbs  and exhaust

she's replaced the bulbs and the back box, but main beam doesn't stay on.
she's not sure whether the car failed because the main beam didn't work at all, or if it failed because it doesn't stay on, because she didn't test the bulbs before the MOT (i told her to, but she said she all her flatmates were out and she couldn't test it herself..)

anyway, main beam doesn't stay on, and it doesn't work when dipped beam is on.

sidelights are fine and the dipped beam is fine. main beam works fine when flashing when the headlights are off, but the main beam doesn't work at all when the headlights are switched on - it doesn't work on flash and it doesn't hold

a brief google found some forum with the same problem.

how does one go about fixing this? replace the stalk, or is there more to it?
also, can you fail an MOT for not being able to have main beams held on?

cheers

oh, she also had advisories for an oil leak, corroded brake hoses, old and cracked tyres and a nail in the rear tyre(!)
i presume this isn't lethal, but should the brake hoses be fixed?

Scrapyard for a new stalk, they're not hard to replace whatsoever :)

Re: brake hoses, are you happy with your girlfriend driving around with corroded brake lines? They could fail at any time.

Corrosion on the hoses is normally only on the outer surface but it can easily go right through in the space of a year, so worth getting done.

As for the lights, it's the stalk that controls the main beam staying on so a replacement from ebay/scrappy should do the job just fine.

yeh, i saw one on ebay for 99p
i presume replacing the stalk = problem solved, seeing as the 205 doesn't have relays?
she's got a haynes manual so i'm sure she can replace an indicator stalk

the brake hoses an easy job?

You plant bulbs. :p

The main beam staying on is a physical aspect of the stalk - so it should be problem solved.

Brake pipes on the back of a 205 are hard to get to as they run over the tank on most models.

i think a professional should do the brake hoses then. how much would it cost?
kwikfit doesn't do stuff like that do they? :o
they replaced the back box for £70 and the greasemonkey asked her out, so they're not that bad :D
