It has been before, in various places including England. I'm fairly sure it was fashionable when my grandmother was a young woman, long before Islam got a hold here. It was also fashionable centuries ago in England, when it was known as a coverchief, a corruption of the French couvre chef.

I wouldn't be bothered if all people were requested to cover their hair before entering a mosque. I wouldn't even be bothered if people other than emergency services were refused entry without doing so unless there was an emergency of some kind and they were seeking shelter.

I am bothered when policewomen are required to do so. I'm bothered because it's sexist and I'm bothered because it's the police on duty.

It's a matter of interpretation what the clothing rules should be, as Islamic scipture is far from clear on the matter. So in a sense the entire clothing issue with Islam is cultural. As far as I can tell without being able to read Arabic myself, wearing a bikini and a head scarf to the beach could be interpreted as being within the clothing rules. I'd be surprised if anyone did interpret them that way, but I think it would be possible to do so.

Maybe they asked a think tank.. maybe they asked women from another force? Who knows but does it really matter?

They did not ask the female PCSOs in the Bath area where Hayleys sister works whom she has already linked. According to her sisters police friends in the Bath area they were not asked either.

Not that it would have made a difference as has already been pointed and linked over 90% were male. Whereas it would be the majority female PCSOs actually having to wear them!

It's better conjecture than I was replying to, namely that they asked the policemen and not the policewomen.

A poster here who says their sister is a policewoman in the area says that police in the area were not asked. She might be lying, but I see no reason to disbelieve her. It's normal to make policy without asking the people who will have to comply with it.

Three female police officers were ordered to dress up as Muslim women for the day just to see what it felt like.

They wore traditional burkhas as part of a scheme designed to help police interact better with the Islamic community.

Two covered their faces with hijab headscarves and niqab veils, leaving only narrow slits to see through, and another wore Muslim dress and a headscarf showing her face.

Im pretty open minded whn it comes to things like this and this isnt a big a issue as its being made out to be. However it is a huge waste of tax and police time!

Looks like a ****ing IRA press conference! So, I'd like to know who was doing the jobs of these three public servants while they were jollying it up as cloth Daleks and were they still being paid out of the public purse?
