I need a 77mm filter for my 80-400 nikon lens. It's more for protection of the main glass than anything else.

I've looked at the Hoya filters as i've got one of those on my 17-135 main lens but the prices seem to vary from £15 to £55 depending on the site you go to.......i'm worried there are some massive differences in quality or product?

My 67mm Hoya Pro1 UV caused noticeable image degradation on my 70-300VR, wouldn't recommend them.

Either top of the range or go without, IMO. Personally I find the lens hoods provide enough protection.

I use B&W F-Pro filters on all my lenses. Top quality and can be had for decent prices on the bay.

Agreed, for the top Nikons you want top filters like the B&W.

Otherwise, you can use a cheaper filter which you leave left off until you need to really use it, such as shooting in a sandstorm or with sea spray, stones being pelted etc. The cheap filters are not worth it.
