i need some help here, i consider myself pc savvy but i had no input into the purchase of this :o, my partner was at toys r us and the chap there sold her a belkin router to use for xbox live and also the xbox live subscription.

i have never looked at how or what is required for xbox live so i dont know if we have the right thing

i have a sky modem/router in my living room, my pc and my partners laptop connect to this via wireless

the boy has his xbox 360 upstairs, what is needed to connect the xbox to the sky modem/router, from what i can see the usb wireless adapter is needed for the xbox but this guy at the shop has sold my partner a Belkin Range Extender/ Access Point.

someone please enlighten me as to what is needed and save me some grief trying to do something with this belkin thing

yes you didnt need a another router, take it back and get a the official wireless adaptor for your xbox instead.

As already stated, you need an official wireless adapter for the 360, not a new router. The 360 wireless adapter will work just like your PC and laptop, it'll connect to your current router without issue. Go back and return them, also if possible seek out the person who sold you the belkin bits and slap him.

lol ill get my missus to slap him as she is the one who trusted a toys r us sales guy :D

hopefully when we get the wireless adapter things will be a bit easier to get setup.

thanks guys :D ;)

I think that router can pick up the wireless signal from your current router and connect to your 360 through ethernet and was probably about 1/4 the price of the official wireless adapter

The guy was just trying to save you money but it is a slightly more complicated way of doing things

ah i see so he was not a crazy man, the thing is he was talking to my missus i was walking round the store, even trying to save her some money he should not have given her something that she could not set up.

i would be happy to set it up to work if there was instructions on how to do this.

Sorry to pee on your bonfire but i'm fairly sure the extender you've been given is unable to act as a wireless bridge which is a feature required for that method of connecting the 360. Because of this i'm fairly sure it just won't work.

You're right though, even if it did support it he shouldn't have recommended it to a novice at networking (no offence against your partner mate, just that i doubt anyone on these forums for example would buy network related hardware from toys r us :)). It's far more complex than the official network adapter or even homeplugs and not really much more cost effective, especially compared to the latter.

My brother's got his set up via one of them at the moment. All you need to do is follow the instructions to set the Belkin up as a range extender, and then plug the Xbox into the back of it using an ethernet.

That said, it's pretty unreliable, and I doubt that you got it for less than £40 or so. If I were you I'd take it back and get the official adapter.

no offence mate she knows very little about pcs let alone networking, i think she assumed i would be able to set it up:confused:

we have it running using a ethernet cable until i figure out how we are going to set it up

we got the access point for £15, i just checked the reciept from toysrus and it was defo £15, so if it is possible to get this working it would be a bonus and save us money, so there is nothing technical to it other than setting it up as an extender ?

I just found this via google:

I bought one of these to connect my Xbox 360 to my wireless network rather than pay the £60 thieving Bill Gates is charging for his wireless dongle. It's works like a charm. I've written a little guide here: http://www.love-munkies.org/forum/viewtopic.php?

I'm not sure if the guide is any good as the website is blocked at work. But it should work after some setting up. I hope the guide is useful!

Ive got one of those Belkin router things and it works fine with my 360.

You have to connect it to a computer first to configure your ssid and password but once that is done just plug it into the 360 and it works fine.

Fair enough, it was closer to £50 when I got mine which is why I thought you may as well get the Xbox one, but if it was that cheap then it's definately worth a try!

Yep, just set it up as an extender (can't remember if you have to connect it to the PC or not to do this, it was a couple of years back that I did mine) and plug the Xbox into the back of it. It should work fine.

One thing that I've found with mine is that it occasionally refuses to repeat the DHCP settings, which means that anything which tries to connect to it wirelessly can't get an IP address. If it does this, just unplug it and plug it back in, before letting it find the network again.

guys thanks for the info

the link maxilive posted does have a guide but i only got so far, i got as far as step 5, the belkin software utility had the UR/AP button and web management button but i could not click on them as they were greyed out and not usable, any ideas guys, i have searched the web but not much useful info on this.

1. Take everything out of the box

2. Power up the AP and connect it to your router via the ethernet cable.

3. Somewhere amongst the debris littering your floor there will be a software CD, install and run the software on your PC.

4. Once the software is running click the Set IP address button, this will bring up a pop-up with boxes in for entering an IP adress and subnet mask for your AP. Assuming your network is like most home networks you should set them to to:
IP 192.168.1.40
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
click ok.

5. Next click the UR/AP button and select UR. Click OK.

6. Next press the Web Management button. This will bring up a browser window asking you to log on, the default password is blank so just press ok. I'd strongly recommend you changed it to something more secure but it's up to you if you don't mind your neighbours browsing your porn folder.

7. Click the Basic tab and click the Site Survey button next to the 'Parent AP SSID' box.

8. A list of available wireless networks will appear, select yours. Boxes will appear asking for the security details for your network, these will be different depending on what security you use. Put in the required information.
If you don't know your security details don't bother asking me I don't know either. I suggest you reset your router and this time write down the details. Assuming you can use a pen.

9. Once you have entered everything press connect. While the AP is rebooting take out the ethernet cable. Once it has finished rebooting it should be connected to your network. If the red magnifying glass thing is still flashing try turning the AP off and back on again.

10. Plug an ethernet cable between your xbox 360 and the AP and voila! You've deprived Bill Gates of £60 (I'm pretty sure he won't starve). Your xbox should now be connected to your home network.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thats the theory, sometimes while you're running through this you get 'Settings failed to save' messages etc. Just put them in again and retry. Basically just use your common sense. If you've alreay set up a router you should be pretty comfortable with the web interface so just have a play.

Don't forget that this AP is also a network extender. If you bring up your list of local wireless networks it will appear as 'Belkin[somelettersgohere]', set up your other wireless devices to connect to it and it will use either the AP or your router depending which is nearest (has the strongest signal).
