When did horror movies stop being scary and otherwise boring?

I used to be scared of them probably when I was <18 years old, Freddie Kruger was a "fave"; now I'm like meh.

I was thinking of clipping this part of "The Haunting In Conneticut" because his Mum says "... and you have a closet" and opens the door and this scree/scary music comes out and I'm like WTF?

You grew up.

They are all crap now, i remember getting scared by Bettlejuice, they are just laughable now unless they involve extreme death like SAW/Hostel

When watching horror movies I'm generally so preoccupied with how awful the story and acting is, I forget everything else. I've yet to see a genuinely good horror movie with a solid story and actors. They're all useless.

Latest I seen was The Hills Have Eyes, recommended by the GFs parents for being horrendously scary...Yeah, right. It was shockingly poor.

Psychological horror is great.

Sadly there seems to be few directors who can actually get into your head these days and instead rely on loud noise scare tactics or extreme gore then call it horror.

I may be looking back through "terror" tainted glasses of youth but I always thought that Alien (the original) and another film, completely forgetten its name. The one where a space ship goes to hell and comes back into real space, where some people find it and things start getting nasty.

Anyway these were films whilst using a little gore etc really got into your head and creeped you out.

i highly recommend the orphanage, bits of it scared the jazz out of me. yes its psychological and a brilliantly made film.

I thought The Descent wasn't too bad. Better at building tension than being outright scary though. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Event Horizon?
One of the better horror films I've seen, although it gets a little silly near the end.

Sadly, nothing really creeps me out, never has. Some films can make me jump, but thats about it. The other thing that *really* annoys me is when people make the stupid choice- Common sense should be screaming at them to be careful etc, but yet they sprint blindly into the tomb etc. and promptly and predictably set off an ancient curse or something very similar.

Thats the one! Thanks for that!

Event Horizon was pretty damn good, but as you say, silly at the end a little

Horror movies are still scary and are most definately not boring...just avoid the mainstream hollywood BS and you'll be away!

French are definately leading the way, Haute Tension, Martyrs and Inside are 3 of the best horror movies, actually no, 3 of the best movies i've ever watched, Frontiers is also worth a watch.

I guarantee you've never seen a horror film like Martyrs before, it's truly unique
