I am wanting to build a new pc bit by bit.

I dont think i could really save up a £800-£1000

Sooo i was thinking of buying the bits in this order.

Pc case
Psu
Optical drives
Hard drives
Mo-bo
cpu
ram
then any other bits needed

any input is great :)

I was thinking in the first 3 months

Pc case
Psu
Optical drives
Hard drives

Next 3 months....

Mo-bo
cpu
ram
then any other bits needed

Still a bad way to do it???

Yes, as you will have used 3 months of your warranty on those items without using them. Plus you wouldn't be able to take advantage of the 28 day return policy if they prove to be DOA etc - as you would have no idea is they were at fault. (unless you plan on testing them in another rig.)

It really is best save and order in one go - it makes returning things far less complicated if things go wrong.

Let me be honest...I have done this before...I never had a problem with it...granted yes you will lose some months warranty on parts when you have not used them and two parts I ordered went faulty when I started using them but still got them replaced under warranty regardless.

I say its down to personal preference...if you know what you want is available there and then, then go for it...if you can hold out a bit longer (and believe me I have done this as well) then again do that. It really is entirely up to you what you want to do...save up or buy bit by bit...both have worked for me and i have never had an issue...

I was lucky enough to come into some money earlier this year which is why I went and bought all my Core i7 stuff in one go...otherwise it was going to be bit by bit... :D

what the poing of having the first bits sitting on a shelf not being used, might as well put the money you spent on buying them aside and buy all in one go .

Well i will need to raid the penny jar and see what i can come up with. I would love to get it all in one go. But i cant see that happening at all :(

Thanks CK61938 Made me a bit happier :D

Bummer :(

Well thanks for the input. Kinda made me sad now lol

What spec were you considering getting and what do you plan to use the build for?

I know you have a budget of £800+ but we may be able to offer alternatives that are cheaper and perhaps more compatible to your needs. If this was the case you may be able to buy your system sooner rather than later. (but i would still recommend all in one go.)

I'm in the same position as you DAMO but really just save it all up as there is new GFX cards out by christmas and also Windows 7.

It will just nagg at you having half the parts and it all collecting dust. As others said if parts aren't working due to users or just faulty you can't know until you've got it all. :/ It's annoying I know, I have to wait till christmas...

I use my computer for Internet surfing only and office work

But i watch a lot of films, convert films, burn films etc

Ive got a dual core pc. If i convert ONE film then the pc is un un useable while its converting. my cpu's are maxed at about 90-100%

so i was thinking quad core lots of ram and a nice gpu for films?

I dont game no, i play on my 360 if i want to game for like 30 mins or someing.

Spec of my pc now is.

2 gig of ram 5300 667mhz
E6600 @ 2.4GHZ
500 GIG HD
EXTERNAL dvd rw
500w power supply
REALLY old gpu
Urm lots of fans and some neons

For your usage i would recommend upgrading your present CPU to a quad (as you want one) the memory to 4gig of 8500 and the GPU if required. It would serve your purposes and save you a lot of money.

Oh, and a new case if you wanted one. It would cost less than half of what you were originally intending on spending and if you got the new case you would have the cosmetic face lift to go with the upgrade.

I know it's not as exciting as a whole new build but it should suit your needs. With the new CPU, 4gig of 8500 memory and a modern GPU (4850/70 would do) it would feel like a new machine - if your content to go down this route?

All i really want to be able todo it surf the web, watch a film and convert a film all at the same time? I want blu ray as well.

My mobo wont take quad and the highest the ram can go is 667mhz

A new case would feel like a new build tho to me :)

If you really can afford it over a longer period. Try to get an interest free credit card or V12 on ocuk. As long as you pay it of you aren't charged interest.
