What maintenance stuff do you leave in your car?

the standard kit that came with the car - jack, spare wheel, spanner and wrench, plus trianlge, jump leads and a tow rope
and then being in belgium, a high-vis jacket and a fire extinguisher in the front passanger footwell
seem to have got away without a first aid kit..

Nothing at all, I think there is a spare wheel in there but I wouldn't have anything to jack the car up with or remove the wheel nuts. :o

are there not legal requirements in the uk as to what you must have in your car, regarding triangles, etc?

Don't have a clue!

Know there's a spare wheel under the car (doubt it's got any pressure in it though), and assume there's a jack and bar somewhere, and know the locking wheel-nut is in the glove-box.

Not in the AA/RAC or anything.

Not sure if it's brave or foolish given I drive a Saxo VTR with the obligatory finest French engineering...

By keeping a topup kit conveniently in the car, using the supplied pouch, you can topup when the car asks for the oil. What if you are far from home?

I would have checked the oil level before my long distance trip from home, don't you do that?

I don't walk out of tesco's, look at my car and think "oh my god, I ought to top up my oil NOW!" so I don't feel the need to carry it around for top ups. If I walked out of tesco and saw my car had dumped a litre or two of oil on the ground I wouldn't be thinking "OMG I need oil to top that up!" because I wouldn't be attempting to drive it anywhere.

If you are a sensible motorist you should be checking your oil every so often anyway. Thus it should never ask you for oil.

If it does then it would suggest a pretty signigifcant leak, which I probably wouldn't want to drive on anyway.

It asks for oil when it requires a topup, not when there is negative amounts of oil in there and your engine is suffering from low oil pressure.

Personally I check mine the old fashion way because my oil level sensor flagged up a fault code so I dont trust it anymore, so it doesnt apply to me :p

It's always changing and frequently not as well organised as it should be but at the moment:

MR2: Spare wheel, jack (but not the wheelbrace or jack handle :p) OEM wheelnuts for spare.
Galant: Spare, factory toolkit, jump leads, tow rope.

Always used to carry a can of fuel in the MR2 as it was easy to stow in the front boot with the spare and other odds and ends. Can't really find anywhere to put similar stuff in the Mitsi as the boot is so cavernous that it'll just rattle around in there. Theres a bit of storage under the boot floor but it's not really deep enough.

Later this evening though I'll be stocked up with my full 'race kit' which will allow me to repair virtually anything I might need to do at the track.

EDIT - Thought I may as well include the 'comprehensive' list. (from memory so I might have missed something):

'Sprint box', containing:
Footpump, 3x hammers (big, little and a rubber mallet), 2x breaker bars (large and small), multimeter, copperslip, tie down straps, tie wraps (3 sizes), gaffer tape, Haynes manual, spare brake pads, Oil, Coolant, Brake/Clutch fluid.

Small toolbox containing:
Comprehensive socket set (standard and deep sockets, short and long wobble extensions and ratchets in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" plus adaptors from one size to another), wheel brace, Ratchet spanners (19mm, 17mm, 14mm, 13mm, 12mm, 10mm, 8mm), brake spanner (10mm and 11mm), Screwdrivers (Couple of Phillips, small flat one for prying, plus a huge selection of interchangeable bits with a handle), Mole grips (2 sizes), pliers, needle nose pliers and side cutters, tyre pressure gauge, 'magnet on a stick', numerous fuses and relays, jubilee clips, paint pens, head torch, electrical tape (black, red and yellow)

Trolley jack plus axle stands.

20l jerry can and spare set of wheels/tyres if required.

Untold.
I plan Every trip out like an SAS mission. :o + :D + :p

No I am Not joking. :D

I expect an Alien or Zombie Invasion at Any minute as well so I take provisions for that as well.

My full list of items carried cannot be listed here as obviously once the Zombies or Aliens invade it will be every man for himself & it'll be cool. For now though I'll just say I have the Guns & Ammo for 4 men & 24000 victims that's not including secondary kills through the explosives I carry of course.

In reality All I carry are 30 cable ties. Real men don't need owt else. :D

I have a bottle of water just in case the coolant needs a quick topup. Oil for topup. Oily rag for generally poking around the engine. Full breakdown kit (jump leads, warning triangle, rope etc etc). Fuses. Spare wheel, jack etc. Allen key in case the gearknob comes loose...aftermarket ones can be a bit pants. The rear bins in an RX7 can be very handy :)
