It beggars belief really. Unbreakable encryption can be found easily on the internet to any average joe.

What the **** are they doing?

Edit: Woah, there's a swear filter now

I'm opposed to the whole idea of ID cards because as outlined it offers me no benefits whatsoever - even the mooted benefits are nebulous at best yet it will cost a small fortune and not even be secure apparantly.

Or are you talking about people who refuse to read the Mail at all and instantly dismiss it as a possible source?

No, I was talking specifically about the style of opposition given by Guy Herbert and his style of lobbyists.

I'm opposed to the ID card because of the obscene costs associated and the fact that it won't add any value to my life whatsoever. That's very different to Guy Herbert who just appears to want to stick it to the man...

Could they not make the chips 'read-only' ? What data on there would need altering at some point in the future?

Not sure if I understand this completely, but surely to clone your card they'd need to have your card in the first place.
Once they have your card you'd be screwed regardless of encryption surely.

But imagine if you had a card stating you were not entitled to benefits, and you could change that to state you were entitled to benefits ...

I believe this would be doable, everything can be cloned these days including modems, digital tv boxs, sky cards, bank/credit cards, sim cards... the list could go on forever.
Putting benefits entitlements and 'shoot on sight' seems a bit far fetched but i wouldnt be suprised if they did do it :\

You can clone just about anything, whats worse, you can do it with stuff readily available from the internet or even highstreet shops.
Cash, credit cards, id cards, passports, bus passes, stock certificates, premium bonds, dvds, cars.
Anything.

It just takes the knowledge, which is usually available from the internet.

Once youve got all the data from the card onto your pc/laptop there will always be ways to modify this data, as soon as they update the cards to stop it new ways will just be around the corner, always the case..

I don't think they really care about card security.

What they want is everybody's details on a national database, if it isn't obtained via ID cards it will be done via passports.

Saying that the security is a complete joke. There are numerous ways they can protect the cards, e.g digitally signing the biometric data & personal data will make any alterations useless if the card readers are designed correctly. Then even if its cloned its essentially useless because the stored details wont match the person, and any alterations could easily be picked up. Additionally they wouldn't match what's on the national register database. It isn't rocket science to spend a bit of time designing things like this correctly to protect citizens.

And I also think there's no way he cloned and edited it in 12mins  Maybe after he did all the research and knew what he was doing it could be automated to 12 minutes but it is by no means a trivial job.

as said in the other thread, its about jobs, nothing more and nothing less. Mostly likely once the conservatives get in the scheme won't be scrapped for two reasons, much of the money has already been spent, and if they scrap it on day one they'll also have headlines like "3000 jobs axed by the Conservatives already" . Which isn't going to help them out.

Look for Conservative spin the second they are in office, it was crap but we changed this tiny minor cheap detail and now its half useful, lets keep it going.

Its useless but this country's base is creating worthless new jobs to keep everyone from being on the dole. If they do scrap the scheme there will be another equally pointless scheme using the same amount of jobs starting soon after, its how government works.

I can't see that any of the data supposed to be on the cards is remotely difficult to obtain and already in databases for other things like passports and tax purposes. What new information do they actually think is going to be used for an ID card, that somehow hurts you or helps them, that they don't have?
