First Time Build Log

The cooler should sitso that the fan is blowing air through the fins and out through the rear case fan.

Like so

Fan should sit on the side next to the ram slots.

Ok sounds good. Looks like ill have to wait for RAM then, which by my calculations, should come on friday if there are no further problems. Long :(

As said above, go ahead and put the rest of it together as ram is about the easiest thing to install in the entire build.

When i placed the fenrir on the PSU thought (admittedly by hand and roughly) it did seem to obscure the RAM sections a fair bit. Dont you think this will be a problem when i have it installed properly. Also, does it matter which slots the RAM goes in, can probably get them into 3 and 4.

May be best to forget about installing the cooler till you get your ram then, that way you can install ram first and ensure theres good clearance between it and the coolers fan, regarding the memory placement, this will be in your boards manual, most manufacturers now use a colour coordination to indicate ram placement, ie a board will have slots layed out from left to right, in say yellow-black-yellow-black, one stick goes in the first yellow slot, second stick goes into the next yellow slot.

This mainly due to the offer, guess i should really check with you guys first this time :) Cheers
That stuff will work ;)

And read/skim through the mobo manual. Answers some of your 'easier' questions :)

Does the Fenrir come with a tube of heatsink compound or pre-applied? If latter, hold off installing it because will have to clean (HSF & CPU) & reapply if you remove it to install the RAM.

Woo been ordered, here on thursday hopefully.
The thermal paste isnt pre-applied so yeah ill wait for the RAM.
Argh the waiting is killing me though :(, oh well, ill learn from the mistake(s) lol
Cheers

no trust me DDR3, been through all this.

Right, im trying to put the case wires onto motherboard.
Power SW for example, now in the MB manual it shows which way round the switch should go (PW- and PW+) but on the actual cable, the two are just labeled with an upwards facing arrow and the letter G. Which way should i put it on?
Cheers

I thought AMD setups don't utilise DDR3 only DDR2?

AM3 based cpu's can use DDR2 or DDR3 but they need different motheboards. All the AM3 socket motherboards support DDR3, but when you put a AM3 cpu into a AM2+ socket you can only use DDR2.

All I can say to that is - "No wonder he got confused."

Perhaps you're thinking of triple channel which only i7s use, whereas AMD setups only use Dual Channel (for now)?..
As was said above, AM3 motherboards are all about DDR3 :)

Yes that is exactly what I meant. So is it correct in thinking that AM3 motherboards are optimised for triple channel memory like the i7 setups?
