A friend of mine is looking at buying a '97 Fiesta. Problem is it has no tax.

I ran out last month, is it pushing it to drive it home ~6 miles, what is the worst outcome for him if stopped, He is on Provisional License + Insured with L Plates.

Cheers Guys

points and a fine.
also, wouldnt be insured, so more points and fine.
your mate would be screwed as only having 6 points to lose is bad.

get it taxed.

also driving without a full license, more points and fine!

im sure points and fine can be given for no insurance

I would strongly advise him not to do this.

If he is going to keep it on the road, then he'll have to tax it anyway.

The worst outcome would be if he had an accident, which can happen to the best of drivers, but it's going to look really bad if he was driving without tax and no insurance, and I expect you could go to prison for that.

If he can't afford the tax, then why doesn't he just wait until he can, because you can't drive the car without tax anyway.

I said he is insured, + has L Plates + I'd supervise him.

You cannot get tax with no insurance certificate, and as its a car he is looking to buy, he cannot get a certificate til next week.

Hence why i was asking about the TAX, the rest is all in order, like i said in the original post. No surpise the OCUK police are on my back like usual

I'm sure the seller would let the vehicle stay at their property for a few days until he can get tax sorted out. Failing that, you could arrange for it to be transported.

Problem is, he has it parked on the side of the road (no off road parking). Think i'm going to let this one go. shame as its a good car for a good price.

Transport out of the question really for a £250 Fiesta.

well theres no ovbious soloution, either delay buying it OR drive it home and suffer the consequences if caught driving or some 1 reports it for no tax.

If it's BOOKED in for an MOT somewhere in the vicinity of where it's going... Then it's quite legal to drive a vehicle without MOT/TAX providing it is INSURED to the MOT place it is booked in at, which may or may not be on the way to your mates house if you can see what I'm getting at...I wouldn't show the current MOT if you happen to get stopped though, you didn't know it had one, right?

Ignore those who spout "ZOMG, U GET POINTS!!!!11!!!".

The 'consequences' of no road take is usually a poxy fine, and the type of copper who would still write you up on it despite your explanation is almost certainly the type of officer who would just find something else wrong with your car/you instead and probably shouldn't be on the force (for the complete and utter lack of discretion).

also, wouldnt be insured,

Why would it not be insured, the OP states the driver will have insurance?

This is one of those things that thousands of people do everyday, and the chance of getting caught on such a short journey is remote, but it's still a possibility so it has to be the drivers decision to take the risk.

If the insurance and supervison are in order, then, in the unlikely event you are caught, you are looking at a £60 fine. If you would be happy to pay that then just drive the thing.

I drove around with no tax for 45 days last year due to an administrative **** up by the dealer who supplied my car and I didn't get caught, so your chances within 6 miles must be low.

I would probably take the risk if it was only 6 miles, when we bought our 325i it was SORN'd and I drove from Guildford to Slough before getting some tax. I guess I could have got a fine in theory but it's not exactly far to drive.

How does he plan on getting to the car in question? Could he not just go pay for it, go to the post office to get the tax and then collect the car?

Thats what I've always done as I've normally needed to get a lift to collect a car, so I just get a lift to the PO too - they're everywhere so it wont be far out the way.

I'd always advise to do that but I had to go against my own advice when I bought my current car due to location and timing reasons. I printed out the forms and had them filled in before collecting the car and drove off straight to the post office. Sods law, I get pulled over. He asks about the tax, I explain that I had just bought the car (showed him the receipt with time on it), was on my way to the post office straight from the place I bought it from (my location confirmed this) and showed him that I had all the documentation including forms already filled out. He sent me on my way and wished me a good weekend, I did likewise.

Sadly, there's plenty of idiots about who would take the attitude of "Oh noes hear comes teh pigs, i shud act like a tw*t to get out of this" who wouldn't have gotten away with it.

At the end of the day, I doubt the police are that bothered if you explain the situation - the system will pick you up quickly enough anyway when the car gets registered to you without tax/sorn

?
There is nothing in the op that says he would be supervised, so insurance would be invalid, no?
He also asked worst case scenario, not what normally happens.

Wasn't there someone on this forum who drove just down the road with something legal missing and got stopped? It happens.

You say the "advice on this forum cracks me up sometimes".

Then you go on to give totally illegal and stupid advice yourself - nice one!
