well I was not sure were to post this, i know the place were i got it is questionable, but anyway here we go
Intel X58 is the First and only non-NVIDIA chipset to get SLI technology, and the users of Intel X38/X48/P45 motherboards probably hate the fact that their hardware doesn’t support SLI. However, everything has changed now…

One reader named Firewings [CCG] at Expreview forum (Chinese version) has figured out the way to get SLI support for its Asus Maximus Formula motherboard based on Intel X38 chipset, with one NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT and one GeForce GTX 260 graphics card.

Expreview.com has contacted the reader and run a quick test for validation. We chose Intel QX9650 OC (4GHz) CPU, Asus Maximus II Formular motherboard, one Yeston GeForce GTX260+ 896GD3, and one Galaxy GeForce GTX 260+ graphics card for the test.

By installing the software that Firewings [CCG] provides us, we managed to enable SLI configuration in Directory Services Restore Mode. Due to some “small problems” according to Firewings [CCG], the SLI configuration can’t be realized in normal mode for now, but he says this will be fixed soon.

We utilize 3DMark Vantage software to check out the performance, and it shows as P20483, which is very close to the SLI performance of dual GTX260.

Firewings [CCG] says the cracking itself is not difficult at all, but he needs to test this on different motherboards before taking this to universal use.

so whats your throughts on this, I say its about time LGA775 users got a decent chipset with SLI/crossfire

Don't know why nVidia don't just release a patch for it... they'd sell a shed load more GPUs... and not like its going to hurt their nForce sales any more :S

This isn't really new though, is it? We had hacked SLi drivers back on the P965 chipset and they worked fine until NVidia sued the hacker and had him shut down.

All you need to do (and I couldn't do it, so I'm doubtless making it seem too easy) is to bypass the bit of code that checks if the chipset is NVidia or not. There is no voodoo (no pun intended) as to how to do it, it's just that NVidias lawyers will be all over you if you do it, because you are interfering with their right to licence their technology using a locking mechanism. In the same way you can't tell people how to hack Windows or distribute copies of Windows with the verification routine disabled, this guy can't go around giving away hacked copies of NVidias driver software.

They'll have him in court very, very, soon.

na the artical is like hours old I got pointed to it via a freind (whos a Nvida fanboi)

I throught that the idea is not *new* as such but it is the the chipset, the person who is working on it has had some bugs but they will be fixed, also they are going to test it on X48 as well as it was only tested on the maxumise 2 formular and the X38 one too :P I can't spell tonight

and it appers its a peiace of software that does it, not sure if its a custom BIOS for the mobo or a windows based software

and anyway its not like hes going to make much money buy it Nvida wanna be thankfull as thier LGA775 chipsets (the newest onces) was nasty :(

Nvida should patch it ASAP imo as it will boost there sales & hit ATI hard.

As most people I know are choosing ATI 48** over Nvida 2** mainly due to there mobos supporting crossfire.

It doesn't matter how he's doing it, he's breaking NVidias protection mechanism and NVidia will sue and no-one will redistribute it. this is what happened 3 years ago. It's basically piracy. I'm pretty sure that discussion of how to get around security mechanisms is a breach of forum rules, but I'll leave that one to a moderator to decide.

I m not stating how one does it, I m unsure myself(nor does the artical). and I m aware its a protected technolgy.

throught it might be a interesting read, nothing may not become of it anyway, as its a expirmanet

i wouldn't be surprised if it is being watched, but if nvidia were smart maybe offer to buy it and then maybe even sell it for a small fee or even distribute it for free either way they would make money.

Hi,

I don't think you quite understand the situation. There is no reason at all why SLi won't work with any NVidia card on any motherboard with two graphics card slots.

The reason they don't is that NVidia have inserted some code into the drivers and the X58 chipset and they check if you have an approved hardware combination. If you do, you get SLi, if you don't then you get a popup mesage saying that SLi isn't suitable for you.

That's how NVidia want it.

NVidia certainly won't be buying anyone's hack. They'll be putting the hacker in jail if they can. In 2006 a very talented German guy cut the section of code that did the SLi check out of the current drivers (175 I think) and he even released several upgrades as NVidia released new drivers. That allowed people like me to run SLi on P965 Crossfire motherboards. Then NVidia got the guy in a German court and applied for damages as they said he'd cost them lost NVidia motherboard chipset sales. They were partially successful, but ultimately they got him stopped and quite frankly, they put down a marker that said - THIS IS OUR TECHNOLOGY, MESS WITH US AT YOUR PERIL - and now some Chinese guy wants to play with them? No hope!

ah i get it, i thought nvidia couldn't put SLI on P45's etc. Well that chinese guy must have a large pair of balls cause if i could do it I wouldn't share it with the public to save my own ass.

well if I did it I wouldn't be sitting here talking about it

in fact i would keep it to myself what they don't know they can't do nothing about.

no P45 is a crossfire chipset at this time (before i7)Nvida made thier SLI chipsets for themselfs(and failed) on the recent onces
