Owen has been doing well so far in friendlys and still has been omitted from England squad - Im starting to think it may be personal reasons between cappello and owen while at Real Madrid?

England strikers are:Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

He's done well and scored against nothing sides and pre-season counts for very little. It's going to take more than that to get his spot in the squad back.

And Capello wasn't Real manager when Owen was there.

Capello wants to see Owen perform in competitive matches and not friendlies before he decides to pick him.

He hasnt done anything yet.

But Emile Heskey hasnt done anything in nearly 15 years of proffesional football, and he still gets a call up.

Yep, it's going to take more than a couple of goals against friendly sides before he's picked, which is fair enough.

Although i'm a bit puzzled by who he has ended up picking.

Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey, Jermain Defoe and Carlton Cole

Srsly?

makes me laugh when players like owen think they are too good for the championship, yet played for us like a league one striker for good knows how long.

i hope he doesnt make the england squad, not because he left us, the fact that he is more a liability. the friendlies he has played in are just that, and the teams were not exactly world class.

call owen up, he is going to dissapoint, get injured and do bad for us, im with capello here, you can partner rooney with better options then owen.

Isn't there a thread like this everytime the England squad is announced and people are still surprised to see Owen excluded? So what, he scored some goals in pre-season, it's friendlies, he's done nothing in competitive matches that should warrant a call up.

He scored a similar amount of goals to most of the players selected despite being in a relegated team.

I don't know why Carlton Cole is there, you may as well call up James Beattie.

If its amounts of goals scored, then surely Bent must be in there.
He is certainly better than Carlton Cole, I cant think of a single thing he is any good at.

Heskey and Cole are in the squad because they fit into the way Capello wants to play, i.e. a big guy up front who is capable of occupying the 2 centre backs allowing more space for Gerrard and Rooney.

The 4th striker is just there to provide another option and it's fair to say that over the last 18 months or so, Defoe's the obvious pick.

iirc Michael Owen had the highest goal to shot ratio in the Premier league last season (or a very similar statistic).

Owen doesn't deserve an England call up, I don't see what the fuss is. If he starts the season well and scores, stays injury free then maybe Capello should reassess the situation but until then I don't see any problems with him not being in the squad.

Never mind England, I want to see him score and score regularly in competitive matches for us before he even thinks of pulling an England shirt

i agree, owen has probably got some attention with his performance in friendlys this year but its not going to be enough he will need to play solid the whole season to be included in the world cup squad and well until christmas to be included in the qualifiers.

Also I dont want him using a striker slot in the squad for him to just come and run and twist his knee without even getting challenged.

I would say that he doesn't deserve to be in it yet, not until he has some more competitive matches under his belt.

HOWEVER

Looking at who actually got into the team, he should be in it now.
