I need to order a gfx card today, and ive settled on either the Gigabyte GTX 275 or the Sapphire HD 4890 Vapor-X, are they both pretty much evenly matched? or does one slightly edge it in the performance stakes?

Help me make my decision people!

You've previously used nVidia so personally I'd say stick with the devil you know...

Performance is swings and round-abouts.

Close your eyes, accidentally order 2 4890s and enjoy your gaming :)

open your eyes and look at the 680i board in his sig ;)

I'm assuming this is what the cards is going into :S

EDIT: OP if you are putting it on the 680i board the nVidia makes sense as you can add another one in later if you feel the need.

lol! :D

Personally I'd go for the GTX275, there is very little between them and as previously said, stick with the make you know.

Ooops ive not got signatures turned on, forgot i had the spec in there! Its still pretty much correct tho, although i now have a 8800GTX.... Still worth the upgrade?

Also regarding motherboard, ive had this setup 2 years! so i feel a cpu and motherboard change could also be on the cards soonish..... :)

hmm 8800GTX is still a powerful card - unless you play at 1920x or above or have a thing for FSAA I'd be tempted to say wait til the new ATI and nVidia cards come out and see whats what.

Typically the first 8800GTX is now sold, hence the need for ordering a card today! So a 275GTX it is :p

Cheers

I upgraded from an 8800GTX to a 4890 - and difference is very noticeable

the 4890s overclock exceedingly well - especially the Asus ones

factor in then the fact that in a lot of games the 4890 benches higher than the 275 and almost on par with the 285 - and that the 4890 is cheaper - then its a no brainer :)

4890 benches higher than a 275? Grid obviously but what other games? Everything i read put them about level, ati up a little on some, down a little in others, excluding grid and crysis.

I currently have a Powercolor Plus 4890 which replaced my 8800GTX and Its hot, noisy and the ATI drivers are rubbish, worst decision I ever made and I am now going to get either GTX275 or GTX285, cant decide which.....

Stick with Nvidia, the company may be in league with the antichrist, but at least their products are in a finished state.

Problem exists between keyboard and chair in my opinion.

well I'm not sure - how well do the 275s overclock ?

get a cheap Asus 4890 - bump the voltage only slightly and clock to 990 or so core

I just think the 4890s are exceedingly good value for money

I bought one in preference to a GTX285

Before getting the Gigabyte read this thread, http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18041323 may help make ure mind up.

On a side note is a 275 on a par with a 4890?? i though the 285 was that cards rival??

That's the odd thing, the 275 also rivals the 285 thus making the 285 even more over priced.

nVidia needs some boycott action to be honest, they're still playing dirty. I wonder if they'll end up getting fined for anti-competitive behaviour like Intel and Microsoft?
