Hi.
In an effort to improve my internet speeds to former glories (3.5mbps), ive just lent a Draytek 2600+ to temporarily replace my Linksys WAG354G.
Upto now, touch wood, im getting better line stats:

Not the best sync speed ive seen, but still better than the WAG354G is doing at the moment.

Now, my question is, do i go with the WAG354G, the Vigor 2600+ or my mates Netgear DG834N?
Which is the better out of the 3 for ADSL usage?

And will i see any benefits moving from my current non-LLU ISP (Zen) to a LLU based one (O2) in regards to speed or would it be a pointless exercise?

Thanks in advance all. :).

I'm not sure about the ADSL router. I just use the free one O2 give you.

As for speed, on a LLU provider, try their website and see what that says. It was spot on for me. However, one thing to consider is the upload speed, for me, that tripled which was far better (and useful for me) than the increase in download speed.

Isn't that worse than 3.5mbps?

DS maximum Rate : 2656000 bps US maximum Rate : 768000 bps

Also

NE Current Attenuation : 53.0 dB Cur SNR Margin : 14.0 dB

Isn't the SNR Margin far too high? Filters being correctly used? Any line problems?

The the sync rate shouldn't drop so much without a reason.

Have you received a letter from Zen re: line upgrades ?
Nope?

What i did notice yesterday evening before i went out, was that it kept dropping the SNR to 6db, then it slowly climbed to 14 again, then dropped to 6, then 14....then i went out so i dont know how long that went on for...?

I am unsure whether this will help, but I sold my draytek 2600+ (it is not adsl2+) and purchased a netgear DG834g version 4 router and flashed it with the latest DGTeam firmware. Using this firmware I am able to use the slider and drop the SNR to 3 and the router does not drop the line. You can get a sky DG834GT router off the bay and do the same thing for a very good price. I have one as a backup.

The Draytek 2600 is donkeys years old, I use a Draytek 2820 for my bethere connection and is very happy with it, but I would say go with the netgear, I used a modded DG834GT before I got the draytek.

Right, well ive just reconfigured the DG834N, connects faster than the vigor, 2.2Meg.
Had a quick play with the SNR, and even though i went all the way down to 10%, it still connected fine at 3.0Meg?

Ive set it back to default for now and will monitor it, but theres a BT engineer due on Thursday afternoon, perhaps he can find a reason for my speed problems....?

Gotta say, impressed with this DG834N though. The DG Team firmware is quite snazzy too. :p

Well 1 day later, and i havnt seen the line drop or slow down at any point.
Its getting a constant 2272 kbps, with a SNR of 12.9db.

Heres hoping that BT can 'fix' it further.

It would have been nice if you had an ISP who would adjust your profile like talktalk does, then you may have been able to squeeze more out of the line than with BT. For instance it would be ideal if you could have a profile of 8FSNR6 and then use the slider in the router down to around 20% to hang on to the line down as low as 3db and sometimes a little lower.

Just in case you are not familiar with the profile coding above......

8= 8meg
F=Fastpath as opposed to Interleaved
SNR6...speaks for itself!

At present I have 24SNR6 with talktalk and I reset the router at around lunch time around 3 months ago and managed over 20meg with SNR3 and the line has not dropped out once, so there it has stayed with the slider on 19%. It is all down to having rewired with an competitor filtered face plate to bypass the house telephone wiring combined with being only being 1.7km from the exchange. The main difference and largest improvement came after fitting the faceplate.

Note. The Netgear routers of this flavour are famous for hanging on to lines at low SNR levels.

Im tempted to buy myself one of those BT I-Plates, they are ment to do some good, gonna see what this engineer can do though.
Pre-Feb i was able to hit 3.5meg without any fancy wiring, with old microfilters and my WAG354G.
Theres no logical reason that i can see for the Cat5e, new filters, and DG834N shouldnt be able to match that, if not beat it! lol.

Engineers just been
The guy was sound as a pound. We were just talking about footy for the last half hour! lol

Basically the socket outside, one of the cables had heavily oxidised, so he replaced that. Then he replaced the master socket with a new one with a RF filter built in, as he thought there may be interferance from the trainline near by.

So it now connects at 2912 kbps, so thats improved and should get better in a day or two.
And he's given me a fancy socket, 30meters of cable and some parts so i can replace whats already there if im still not happy with the speed increase. Basically a socket that has a telephone connector on one side, and a RJ45 on the other.

Impressed tbh.:D.
