Anything out there quite like Black & White?

I've been playing the second B&W over the last couple of days, and it's really grabbed my attention. Between this and Anno 1404 I've had my days pretty filled - pesky work keeps getting in the way, but how else am I gonna earn money for games?

So, any pointers? Populous was another extreme timewaster, Magic Carpet too, so drop your suggestions in the box.

Definitely need to patch up. It's very enjoyable - the construction is a lot better, as is the miracle system - though the latter is a bit more limited, and the epic miracles are a bit of a chore. Especially because your opponents seem to have no limit on their range. There's a rudimentary battle system for armies, and the physics engine crops up some interesting possibilities. the game really suffers from a lack of skirmish mode - unless anyone knows something I don't?

Do all the patches stop B&W2 crashing so much? I gave up first time round, tried it again 18 months ago and it was just as bad :(

I really wish B&W2 had a skirmish mode =[

B&W 1 was amazing, probably the first game I had on my first PC, before that, populous on parent's computer or something.

I've not had many problems with crashes so far. Rig issues? And while I say patching is a must, I normally say that. My router is having fits at the mo, so my internet connection is sporadic. Thanks be to NHS computers, and their stone-age keyboards. Really builds finger strength.

So no other suggestions for similar games? Not necessarily giant creatures, but I've no objection to that. Populous was another favourite of mine - anything freeform like that, not Age of Mythology style.

Haha I loved populous when I got my first computer. :D I never had a strategy for it though, I just tended to charge up all my shaman's spells and drop volcanos and tornados all over enemies :p Oh, and putting loads of the fireball men in balloons :D

Try Grand Ages: Rome. Brilliant game, it's basically what Caesar IV should have been. There's a demo available on filefront, fileshack etc.

Caesar IV? I think I got Caesar III at home, sorta like Anno 1404 style? I shall check that.

Favourite part of Populous was bouncing folks with fireball. One trick of the mechanics launched a guy 2 screens away into the sea - golden moment.

I've not played Anno 1404, but judging by some screenshots Grand Ages: Rome is similar.

Unfortunately Caesar IV was a bit of a let down. It could have been a really good game, but they ruined it for me. Go for Grand Ages: Rome :D

Is it pretty freeform? By which I mean, are we talking about grid-building or a more black & white-esque rotation placement? A minor issue, but it makes a difference.

I remember playing populous on the master system. Awesome stuff. Apart from I was only about 5 or 6 or something and we didnt have an instruction manual. Lol
Apart from the first few stages of spore i cant think of any games like B&W.

As you seem to be a fan of Bullfrog, have you considered one of the Dungeon Keeper games?

Although graphically drastically different, being underground, it's got a similar free form style and generally 'feels' similar to Black and White, although personally I found DK to be much more fun.

Smacking a few imps around and torturing creatures Guantanamo style gives you a warm comfortable glow inside :D

I forgot this game. Need to play it now :)

why oh why can't someone do DK3? DK2 was fantastic but the graphics are a bit pants by modern standards.

The first was one of my all-time favourites. I didn't get along as well with the second one - sure it was innovative, but it just didn't feel the same. Startopia also sounds good, but a DK remake sounds even better - when's it due? I can't look myself, damn NHS filter blocks out 'games'.

I think the building system is like Black & White, might even be better. The demo isn't too big, you should give it a go.
