Why is our numberplate system so rubbish?

Yea, no front plate would be cool.

But then they couldnt do us for 31 in a 30 from a mobile camera and that would never do.

You mean they may have to police us pro-actively?!! Whatever next?! :D

I agree that our plates don't look that great but it could be a lot worse when it comes to the administration. In Germany expect to take at least a morning off work if you buy a car, as you need to go to the government run office to register your car and pick up plates.

At least their German numberplates look like German numberplates though. ;)

Why do our plates change every 6 months is the question.

But all of our car based paperwork is extremely straightforward IMO.

Not at all, I don't need to watch my speedo over here :p

Ah, I didn't read all your car posts about Aus but from this I'm assuming they are worse than us when it comes to cameras? :p

I suspect it would have a serious detrementary impact on new car sales if the age was removed from a cars identity. New cars are incredibly cheap in America so they don't really care, but over here I bet it would have a big impact. Arab plates are the best, a simple number and word - theres a Roller out here with DUBAI 1, bet it cost pennies compared to what we would pay over here for such an exclusive plate

when i was in oz, i saw a Dodge Charger R/T that had the private plate "The Beast"

how is that not awesome !

UK plates do indeed suck, and are now so rigerously enforced due to this countrys obsession with CCTV, and in particular the ANPR aspect of it.

But even thats no excuse for stupidly anal age identifier part of the plate, and equally forcing them to be a set format and banning actual made up plates

we wouldnt have plates with screws in the letters etc.. if you were allowed to buy whatever you wanted (within reason of course)

I suspect it would have a serious detrementary impact on new car sales if the age was removed from a cars identity.

i suspect this is the awfull truth, its been left this way to drive car sales :(

Couldnt agree more, they do suck, the US plate system is better, I also think that disabled "blue badges" should be part of the number plate and no a piece of paper left in the window.

That would put a stop to bob or sally borrowing mum or dads blue badge so they can park where ever they want.

Rubbish, that would be even worse. What if the disabled person isn't able to drive and is only driven places by an able-bodied friend of relative? Your system would either mean that the disabled person can no longer use disabled parking, or that multiple able-bodied people are driving around with disabled tags on their cars for no reason most of the time. Stupid.

Anyway back on topic, yes the system is stupid, frankly I have no idea what a 10/60 plate is, WTF?

Our plate system earns money. So it wont be changing any time soon.

Wasn't the current system meant to last 100 years from implementation?

Dont know, but you can bet your life if thats true when this 100 year cycle is done, what follows it will involve transfer fee's, retention certificates and a cost to make plates profit.

Along with a booming personal plate industry.

But how does this work when it comes to stolen cars? Genuine question, as I have no idea how the police could easily/quickly tell if a car is stolen/no insurance/no tax through ANPR.

Or is the plate of the person always registered to a particular car and then it is that transferred?

The plate is tied to the vehicle, the vehicle is tied to a person, the registered keeper. If you want to move the plate you apply to the DVLA to transfer it to a new vehicle, which is tied to a person who is the registered keeper... etc etc :)

So it would be no different than now.
