brothers job interview.. what is WAM ALM and VALM?!?!

Hi

My younger brother is looking for a job (did some IT course at college a few years back) and he just got told he had an interview tomorrow morning! :eek:

"Experience of CISCO, HP, level 2 /3 in switches beneficial, WAM, ALM, VALM essential"

He assumed I would know what WAM, ALM and VALM are but I do not have a clue. Never done ICT and all I know about is building PCs and overclocking which I learnt from here!

Does anyone know?

Never heard of WAM or VALM. ALM is Access Layer Multicasting. WAM might Wireless Access Multicasting, VALM perhaps Virtual Access Layer Multicasting???

Probably made up their own TLA (Three Letter Acronym) for something which already has another name.

Any hints as to what the job title is / what it's doing?
 
Not being funny but it seems the job is somewhat out of his depth? Unless all of the rest of the required knowledge / experience is covered fine?

He says the title is "Technical Support Engineer" ... I think it is just a case of him applying to anything he thinks he has most of the criteria for.

He would not have mentioned any thing like that on his CV/Covering letter so I wonder why they want to interview him lol? :D

That was just an extract I copied from Jobseekers.

If he does not apply to every job he can he will prob mess up ones he can get by not having any chance to practice interviews. Who knows he might even get it :D but if not he has not lost anything being unemployed and all :)
 
Generally, if he comes across as bright, and having a good knowledge of other areas, these 'essential' skills can easily become 'desirable'.

A good person/worker is a lot harder to find that someone with a lot of IT knowledge.

Cheers for the insight :) I shown him your post so *fingers crossed* he goes in more calm now and not worrying they are going to tear him to shreds for not having 100% of the criteria.

I just keep saying go for the experience as at least he will be better prepared more for next time round.

Is it normal in IT jobs to give such little notice, like ringing at 4.30pm for 11 am the next day?

Thats the average for most first-time roles these days!
 
For anyone who cares his employment contract pdf thing just come through via email... literally a second ago :eek:

I honestly can't believe he got the job, so happy for him though! :p
 
Well done - hope he enjoys it

Im interviewed a few school / college grads in the last year or so and as long as they are enthusiastic and willing to learn (while having the basics already) its just whether the charachter will fit in with the team already that is the main part of the interview

It's great to see that with a little bit of enthusiasm and willing, someone can get a job even without all the criteria that companies look for.

Hope it goes well. Did he find out what the Acronyms meant?

The funny thing is when he asked them about cisco they said "we don't use it, too expensive, only things cisco we use is linksys switches" :p

Yeah seems he will be managing remote cctv server stuff and building the servers ect. Main thing is he likes the people there and was chatting with them for a few hours after the interview!

edit: if he did find out what the Acronyms meant he never told me. I know he had to do a little networking exam though :)
